Help:How To Add Links
From Jackcentric
[edit] Internal Links
To link to another page on this wiki, simply enclose the page title with double brackets. Remember to include the namespace prefix if the page isn't in the main namespace. To link to a page using text that isn't the page title, add the replacement text after the link, separated by a pipe (|). To link to a category without adding the page you're on to the category, add a colon before the category prefix.
You type: | Appears as: |
---|---|
[[Ashes and Dust]] | Ashes and Dust -- Links to the "Ashes and Dust" story page. |
[[Ashes and Dust | Blucougar's story]] | Blucougar's story -- Links to the "Ashes and Dust" story page. |
[[How To Add Listings]] | How To Add Listings -- Links to a page in the main namespace that shouldn't exist. |
[[Help:How To Add Listings]] | Help:How To Add Listings -- Links to the right page in the help namespace, but looks awkward. |
[[Help:How To Add Listings | how to add stories]] | how to add stories -- Links to the right help page and looks better in the middle of a paragraph. |
[[Category:Jack/Ianto]] | Will add the page to the Jack/Ianto category, and the "Jack/Ianto" text will show up only in the category list at the bottom of the page. |
[[:Category:Jack/Ianto]] | Category:Jack/Ianto -- Creates a followable link to the Jack/Ianto category without adding the page to the category. |
[[:Category:Jack/Ianto | Jack/Ianto]] | Jack/Ianto -- Creates a followable link to the Jack/Ianto category without adding the page to the category. |
[edit] External Links
To add an external link, use either no brackets or a set of single brackets with the replacement name following the link. Do not use the pipe that would be required for an internal link.
You type: | Appears as: |
---|---|
http://community.livejournal.com/galactic_conman/ | http://community.livejournal.com/galactic_conman/ -- Using no brackets links right but shows the whole URL. |
[[http://community.livejournal.com/galactic_conman/]] | [[1]] -- Double brackets link right but look horribly wrong. |
[http://community.livejournal.com/galactic_conman/] | [2] -- Single brackets link right but look only slightly better. |
[http://community.livejournal.com/galactic_conman/ Galactic Conman] | Galactic Conman -- Single brackets with replacement text link right and look right. |
[edit] Best Practices
- If a story or other fanwork is available at multiple sites, our listing should include as many of the URLs as possible.
- If a fanwork has been recc'd or reviewed elsewhere or has a commentary, art, or other supplementary material, feel free to include those URLs as well. Make sure they're labeled well so that the reader knows what the supplemental link leads to.
- Try to list URLs in the Galactic Conman format rather than the http://community.livejournal.com/galactic_conman/ format; it keeps things neater and more readable. However, it's better to include an unadorned URL and let someone else neaten it up later than not to include it at all because you can't remember the code and don't have time to look it up.
- Do not include anchors in a URL unless they are necessary to find the fic, such as for a comment fic that's hidden way down in a comment thread. Anchors that are used just to hide the fic behind a cut-tag (such as "xxxx.html#cutid1") should not be included.
- Do not include variables like "?style=mine" or "?style=light" or "?nc=3" or "?mode=reply".
- Do include adult content warnings that are built into the URL.
- If a non-adult story is hosted at a site with adult material in the layout, include a warning with the URL so that readers aren't surprised.
- Links to f'locked or password-protected sites are fine, but please mark them as such.
- In general, you should link only to the first chapter of a multichapter story. Exceptions: If a multichapter story has a master list of its own, link to that instead of to the first chapter. And if a multichapter story does not have a master list and the individual chapters aren't all linked to each other, you're welcome to include links to each chapter.
Here's a good example of how links should appear in a story listing.
