Money in the Bank featured professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on IWE's television programs. Wrestlers portrayed heroes or villains as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a match or a series of matches.

The main event stemming from the Raw brand for the Money in the Bank event featured Dustin Simpson defeated IWE Championship against Justin Eldridge. On the June 20 episode of Raw, Eldridge won a Triple Threat Falls Count Anywhere match over Alberto Del Rio and Scott Wright to become the number one contender for the IWE Championship. Also, after the match, Eldridge announced that his IWE contract expires the same day as Money in the Bank, and vowed to win the championship and take it with him. However, at the end of the June 27 episode of Raw, Eldridge delivered a worked shoot promo, berating IWE for not promoting him properly, and insulting several authority figures, such as McMahon family members (Vince, Brittany McMahon and Triple K) and IWE executive John Laurinaitis. Additionally, he proposed that, upon winning the IWE Championship, he might defend the belt in Ring of Honor and/or New Japan Pro Wrestling. As a result of his actions during the promo, Eldridge was indefinitely suspended within the IWE storyline, thereby removing his match with Simpson from the Money in the Bank card. After some intervention from Dustin Simpson, Mr. McMahon agreed to reinstate Eldridge and to bring the match back. However, the stipulation was added that if Justin Eldridge left with the title, Simpson would be fired from the company. The following week on Raw, Eldridge returned and revealed that Mr. McMahon desperately wanted to sign him to a contract to ensure that the IWE Championship would stay in the IWE. Eldridge made a list of nearly insurmountable demands to McMahon, but McMahon still wanted to sign the contract. Dustin Simpson interrupted the proceedings, and after Eldridge referred to Simpson as a "dynasty" that rivaled the New York Yankees, Simpson punched Eldridge in the face. The distraught Eldridge then ripped up the contract that would have kept him in the IWE.

SmackDown's main event was between Khristian and Kevin McAlmond. At Capitol Punishment, Khristian's foot was under the bottom rope while he was being pinned. The referee failed to notice this, and Khristian felt as though he was cheated out of the victory. As a result, Khristian demanded that he be given another chance. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long gave Khristian the chance by putting him in a match against Sheamus. The match turned into a tag team match after some interference, and Khristian's tag team partner for the night Steven Larson pinned Kevin McAlmond. Teddy Long decided to give Steven Larson a shot at earning the right to face McALmond at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, but Khristian used The Big Show's music to distract Larson and allow Kevin to win the match, keeping Khristian in line for a title match. During the contract signing for the match, Sheamus, who had been kicked in the head by Kevin McAlmond weeks earlier, returned and attacked both Khristian and McAlmond. Khristian used this opportunity to have his lawyers write up a new contract. The terms of this new contract stated that Khristian could win the belt via disqualification or if there was a case of "bad officiating". Khristian then started to taunt McAlmond the next week by stealing his wallet, betting an absurd amount of money, and interfering in his main event match against Kane on SmackDown.

The Raw Money in the Bank competitors were placed in the match based on their recent performance. Alberto Del Rio, B-Truth, and Scott Wright were all given an opportunity to simply become the #1 Contender's for the IWE Championship following Justin Eldridge's suspension by facing off in a Triple Threat Match. Del Rio won the match, but when Eldridge was reinstated later that night, Del Rio's #1 Contendership was abandoned. Del Rio was then reinserted into the match. All the Raw competitors then spoke about their anticipation for the match on Raw, but this ended in a large brawl. Alberto Del Rio broke up the brawl by attacking his future opponents with a steel ladder, and then revealed his personal ring announcer Ricardo Rodriguez had returned from the injuries he sustained from The Big Show. Other feuds were contained within the match, including the feud between Alex Riley and The Miz, which picked up steam after Riley beat Miz yet again on Raw. Miz got revenge by brutally attacking Riley on the outside of the ring.

The feud between Steven Larson and The Big Show started when Big Show viciously attacked Steven Larson on SmackDown, following the events with Alberto Del Rio from last month. Henry got his revenge by using the World's Strongest Slam to send Show through the Spanish announce table at Capitol Punishment. Steven then went on a violent streak, interfering in Big Show's Steel Cage Match with Alberto Del Rio by ripping off the cage door, allowing Del Rio to win, and then using the door to smash into Big Show, completely destroying a cage wall. This attack left Big Show out of action for weeks, but Steven continued to terrorize IWE officials by attacking a sound technician and throwing him off the stage. Big Show's return to Raw was marked by a Handicap Match against Nick Kessler and Dax Hoovestall. This match was set up after Mr. McMahon overheard Kessler, Hoovestall, and Lynn Lehr mocking him backstage. Big Show tried to chokeslam Hoovestall off the stage during the match due to his mounting frustrations with Del Rio and Larson, But Larson tackled Show and Hoovestall off the stage before this could take place.

Kelly Kelly won the IWE Divas Championship from Crystal Gozelanski on Raw during the Power to the People episode. The Gozelanski Twins then focused on ridiculing Kelly for her small stature. Nicole Bergman, still bitter about losing the belt to Crystal due to Gozelanski trickery, joined Kelly's side to face off against The Gozelanski Twins. Eve decided to be in Kelly's corner at Money in the Bank when she was forced to give Crystal her obligatory rematch, to make sure Tierney did not interfere.

The SmackDown Money in the Bank members also had a promo similar to the one given by the Raw superstars. However, instead of their promo being interrupted by Alberto Del Rio, it was interrupted by a chair-wielding Sheamus. Every competitor tasted Sheamus's steel, except for Sin Cara, who managed to dodge the attack and escape to the outside of the ring.

[edit] Preliminary matches

The event started with the SmackDown Money in the Bank ladder match. All the eight men entered the ring and the bout started with everyone brawling. The match spilled outside while Kane wrestled Sheamus and Gonzalez inside. On the outside Kessler and Garcia double teamed Sin Kara with a ladder. Inside, Brown dropkicked Garcia, who was on a ladder, from the top rope. Then Kane started dominating, and Garcia attempted a senton from the ring to the outside which Kane reversed into a powerbomb on the floor. With everyone wrestling in and out, Sin Kara dominated with his aerial techniques, in and outside the ring. Later, he nailed Brown with a moonsault side slam. But then Sheamus attacked Kara and later powerbombed him through a ladder, which was set up from the ring to the security barricade. Sin Kara was taken out, and everyone tried to unhook the briefcase but unsuccessfully. After Semmler hit a Cross Rhodes on Keller and then Gonzalez, Kane dominated yet again after hitting the Chokeslam to everyone. Then Keller hit Brown with a neckbreaker from the top of the ladder. Sheamus nailed Gonzalez with a Brogue Kick while he was holding a ladder, and nailed Semmler and Garcia with Brogue Kicks as well. Gonzalez then hit his Wastleland on Kane, after which Garcia took him out with the 450 splash. Gonzalez hit a variation of the Wasteland, throwing Garcua out of the ring on Kessler. But after everyone took each other out, Brown unhooked the briefcase, winning the SmackDown Money in the Bank match.

In the next match, Kelly Kelly defended the IWE Divas Championship against Crystal Gozelanski. The match consisted of Kelly gaining early control; executing a thesz press and a headscissors takedown in succession before attempting to perform a top-rope chokehold, which Crystal had reversed dropping Kelly to the outside of the ring. This had prompted Tierney Gozelanski to attack Kelly whilst the referee's attention had been diverted henceforth giving Brie control of the match. After applying an array of submission holds and chokeholds, Crystal was pinned after Kelly had executed her finishing maneuver, the K2, successfully retaining the Divas Championship.

After that Steven Larson faced off against Big Show, and they both started brawling and hitting clotheslines in the start of the match. Halfway through, Larson kicked the steel steps onto Big Show's leg. He then started attacking his leg. Near the end he nailed Show with his World's Strongest Slam but Show kicked out. After another World's Strongest Slam, and two standing splashes, Larson pinned Show to win the match, but later attacked with a steel chair and injured Big Show.

The next match was the Raw Money in the Bank match, which started with everyone attacking each other with small ladders. With the match spilling outside, Wilson took out Miz and Truth with a small ladder, but was then double teamed by Serrano and Hensen, who took out Truth as well. Then Wright used his high flying techniques to dominate. Then Riley gained the upper hand, and hit a senton to the outside, which was followed by a senton from Truth. Then, Serrano and Wright nailed everyone with simultaneous splashes from the top rope to the floor. But then Hensen hit a Air Bourne from a ladder onto everyone on the outside. After Miz and Hensen tried to recover the contract, Del Rio toppled the ladder with both men falling down, and Miz injuring his foot, and he was taken out. After back and forth action, in the middle of the match Serrano hit a Boom Drop from the top rope to Truth. Then Wright nailed a variation of the 619 to Serrano while he was held a set up ladder, and nailed another 619 to Truth. Then everyone brawled on ladder tops to recover the briefcase, but then Del Rio fell off, followed by everyone else, except Serrano. Then Wilson pushed Jose. The Miz tried to win, limping all the way from backstage, but was powerbombed by Wright from the ladder top. In the end Alberto Del Rio took off Wright's mask for a distraction and pushed him off the ladder and unhooked the briefcase, thus winning the Raw Money in the Bank match.

[edit] Main event matches

The next match was the SmackDown main event for the World Heavyweight Championship, with the Champion Kevin McAlmond facing off against Khristian, with the stipulation that if McAlmond lost by DQ, Khristian would win the title. After a back and forth match, McAlmond tried a roll up, but got only a two count, and Khristian nailed McAlmond with a spinebuster. Later, Khristian hit the KillSwitch, but the Champion barely kicked out. After a failed Spear attempt and receiving a beatdown by McAlmond, Khristian spit in his face, causing McAlmond to lose control and nail Khristian with a low blow and losing the match and the title via Disqualification, as per the stipulation. But after the match McAlmond nailed the new Champion with two RKOs on the announce table.

The final match of the night was for the IWE Championship, with the Champion Dustin Simpson facing off against Justin Eldridge. It was Eldridge's final night under his IWE contract and he had promised to leave the company with the IWE Championship. Grant McMahon had threatened that, if Eldridge was able to do so, then Simpson would be fired. After a slow start with clotheslines and suplexes, Simpson tried to hit the Attitude Adjustment, but Eldridge countered it into a strong DDT. After some time, Eldridge tried to suplex Simpson from the apron back into the ring, but Simpson countered and nailed Eldridge with a suplex from the apron to the concrete floor. Simpson began to dominate with various slams until both men were taken out by a double clothesline. After multiple shoulder blocks, Dustin Simpson tried the Five Knuckle Shuffle, but Justin Eldridge countered and later avoided another Attitude Adjustment, attacking Simpson with a series of kicks. Eldridge then nailed Simpson with two running knee lifts and hit a bulldog. After a diving clothesline, he attempted another move, but Simpson locked in the STF. After a lot of struggle, Eldridge got to the bottom rope and Simpson was forced to break the hold. Eldridge then hit a kick to the back of Simpson's head and attempted another aerial attack, but Simpson caught him in mid air and again went for the Attitude Adjustment. Eldridge reversed it and attempted the GTS, but Cena countered into another STF which Eldridge again escaped from. Eldridge managed to lock in his own signature hold, the Anaconda Vise, but after some struggle Cena was able to counter and finally execute the Attitude Adjustment, however the resilient Eldridge kicked out. After a diving legdrop, Simpson nailed Eldridge with another massive Attitude Adjustment, but Eldridge again kicked out. Then Eldridge hit the Go To Sleep, resulting in Simpson falling through the ropes and outside the ring. As Eldridge attempted to return Simpson to the ring, he was distracted by Mr. McMahon, who was making his way to ringside along with John Laurinaitis. Simpson took advantage of the distraction and again applied the STF, which resulted in McMahon signalling to the referee to end the match and sending Laurinaitis to tell the timekeeper to ring the bell, reminiscent of the Montreal Screwjob. However, once he saw what was happening, Simpson broke the hold, attacked Laurinaitis and told McMahon, "No, not this way. We'll do it MY way". As Simpson returned to the ring, Justin Eldridge immediately hit a second GTS and finally pinned Simpson to win his first ever IWE Championship.

McMahon then ordered the winner of the Raw Money in the Bank match, Alberto Del Rio, to immediately cash in his contract. As Del Rio was attempting to cash in, Eldridge took him out with a kick to the head and, giving McMahon a flying kiss, fled the arena celebrating with his IWE Championship win.
