[edit] Background

SummerSlam will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that play out on GWF's television programs. Wrestlers portray heels or faces as they followed a series of events that build tension, and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.

At King of the Ring, Randy Orton and Finlay both failed to win the GWF World Heavyweight Championship with Finlay being pinned by champion Steven Richards, after the match Orton would give a post match beatdown on Finlay, the next night on Raw is War, Orton would demand a one-on-one rematch against Richards, Matt Murphy would schedule a No. 1 contender's match to the GWF World Heavyweight Championship between Orton and Finlay at the SummerSlam PPV.
