Background
Money in the Bank will feature professional wrestling matches that involve different wrestlers from pre-existing feuds, plots, and storylines that will be played out on IWE's primary television programs. Wrestlers will portray villains or heroes as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.
This year's Money in the Bank ladder matches will have a slightly different format, as while there will be the usual two matches (one for a future IWE Championship match and one for a future World Heavyweight Championship match), they will each be interbranded; where at previous Money in the Bank PPVs, Raw wrestlers competed for the WWE Championship shot, and SmackDown competitors challenged for the World Title opportunity.
On the June 25 edition of Raw, Lynn Lehr announced that Kane, Khris Jericho, Big Show and Dustin Simpson will be the participants in the IWE Championship contract Money in the Bank ladder match. On the same episode, it was announced that Justin Eldridge would defend the IWE Championship against Kody Brown.
On the June 29 edition of SmackDown, qualifying matches were held for the Money in the Bank ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship contract. In those matches, Damien Sandow defeated Zack Nuss, Tyson Booth defeated Charlie Wilson, Justin Black and Khristian defeated Mark Semmler and David Mahrt in a tag team match and Tensai defeated Jeremiah Garcia. On the July 3 "Great American Bash" edition of SmackDown, Mark Semmler defeated Khristian (Semmler had appealed to the Board of Directors for another chance since he didn't get pinned in the previous week's tag team match), and Nick Kessler defeated Alex Riley in two more qualifying matches.
In addition, there is a rivalry involving Justin Eldridge and Kody Brown for Eldridge's IWE Championship. In his current reign as IWE Champion, he has successfully defended his title against several contenders, and has recently defeated Brown in several pay-per-views, the last one also involving Kane. At the same time, Brown's ex-girlfriend AJ has taken a liking towards Eldridge and Kane and has also rekindled her interest in Brown but Eldridge and Kane believes that she is unstable due to Brown breaking up with AJ. Following No Way Out, Brown defeated Eldridge and Kane to earn his rematch against Eldridge at Money in the Bank. Weeks later, AJ was named special guest referee.
