The Last Stand (2014) will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that develop on AEW's television programs. Wrestlers portrayed villains or heroes as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.
The main feud heading into the pay-per-view was World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk facing Samoa Joe in a Non-title Last Man Standing match. Punk has been feuding with the entire faction of the Tribe, on the January 27, 2014 episode of Concussion CM Punk and Colt Cabana defeated The Briscoe Brothers to win the AEW Tag Team Championships only to have The Usos later on in the night defeat Punk and Cabana to win the titles from them. Last month at AEW 1: Punk vs. Rock Punk defeated Tribe leader the Rock to retain the World Heavyweight Championship which caused the Rock to leave AEW also. Later that week on Concussion it was announced that Joe will take on Punk in a non-title Last Man Standing match at the PPV.
Another main rivalry for the pay-per-view is Taz facing the returning Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match. On March 12, 2012 at the AEW Concussion: March Madness episode Orton defeated Taz to win the World Heavyweight Championship and to end Taz's in ring wrestling career, later that year AEW Owner Shane McMahon brought Taz back to AEW as the Director of Authority, In 2013 Shane McMahon was "chased" out of AEW by now-AEW Owner Taz, with Taz taking over the company from Shane McMahon. On June 30, 2013 at Superclash Joe defeated Orton in a Career vs. Career match. In 2014, Shane McMahon made his way back to AEW and taking "his spot" as AEW Owner back, with Shane McMahon return he re-signed Orton and scheduled a match against Orton at the PPV telling the AEW Universe that it was Taz's idea on forcing Orton out of the company.
