The event featured wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines. Wrestlers portrayed villains, heroes, or less distinguishable characters in the scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

The major storyline entering SuperBrawl was the ongoing dispute over the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. At Starrcade in December 1997, Hollywood Hogan and Sting squared off in the main event for the title, which at the time belonged to Hogan.
