The NGW TakeOver show will feature professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds and storylines that play out on the NGW television program prior to the TakeOver show itself. Wrestlers portray faces (the "heroes") or heels (the "villains") as they follow a series of events that built tension and culminated in a match or a series of matches.

NGW Takeover: The End is Near, Brandon Bickel defeated Kooper McAlmond and Chris Gomez in a Triple threat elimination match to retain the NGW Championship. At the same event, Devin Sullivan defeated Jose Serrano and declared his intentions of going after the NGW Championship, however Kevin Hunter returned to NGW at the event also wanting a shot at the title. This lead to a Fatal four way match between McAlmond, Gomez, Sullivan and Hunter that took place on January 30 episode of NGW to determine the No.1 contender for the NXT Championship. The match ended in a no contest after Sullivan submitted to both Gomez's Sharpshooter and McAlmond's Crossface at the same time. Hunter, Gomez and McAlmond faced each other in a No.1 contender's match on the February 20 episode of NGW where Gomez and McAlmond submitted Hunter. To finally resolve the issue of No.1 contender, Gomez and McAlmond faced each other in a Two-out-of-three falls match on March 12 episode of NGW where the match ended in a tie 3-3, the NGW Champion Brandon Bickel informed both Gomez and McAlmond that he went to the NGW General Manager and agreed to face both of them one more time Triple Threat Street Fight for the title at NGW Takeover: Billings.

Despite Eason not being involved in the No.1 contender's matches for the NGW Championship, former NGW Champion Elijah Eason wanted to be involved in the event during SuperBrawl weekend, NGW General Manager announced that Eason will face NGW's newest superstar In Chul Cho at the event

After failing to become No.1 contender Devin Sullivan, Ryan Wilson and Sean Sampson attacked Kelly Wilson, Francis Reishus and Ryan Ford during a scheduled match on the March 12 episode of NGW and complained that a conspiracy had been in play with NGW Management and The Varsity Club stable, blame them for losing the NGW Tag Team Championship rematch as well as him losing in the No.1 contenders match. NGW General Manager announced the next week that Sullivan, Wilson and Sampson would face Ford, Reishus and Wilson in a Six-man elimination tag team match at NGW Takeover: Billings.

Also on the March 19, 2016, episode of NGW, The American Naturals defeated The Varsity Club (Devin Sullivan and Ryan Wilson) to become the #1 contenders for the NGW Tag Team Championship. They will face The Hawaiian Blondes, who recently beat The Hopkins (James and Mark) and Kooper McAlmond and John Marshall in a Triple threat tag team match to retain the titles at Apocalypse.

After Kaycee Shires retained the NGW Women's Championship against Kiela McAlmond at NGW Takeover: The End is Near, a women's battle royal took place on January 16 episode of NGW to determine the No.1 contender for the Women's Championship, which was won by Katrina Rise after she last eliminated Sarah Pavey. Shires successfully retained the Women's Championship against Rice on February 13 episode of NGW. After the match, Rice was given a post match beatdown by Pavey, Katie Lilje and Laura Pickett with Shires struggling to fend off until gaining some unlikely assistance by Emily Taflan who helped fend off Pavey and Pickett before turning towards Shires and the Women's Championship, signifying a challenge for the title. After Shires, Rice and Taflan defeated Pavey, Lilje and Pickett in a six-women tag team match on March 19 episode of NGW, the NGW General Manager announced that Shires will defend the NGW Women's Championship against Taflan at NGW TakeOver: Dallas.
