Appearance
Professor Rhys, 32 years old, is a tall man, standing at about 6’3” (6' 5 or 6" if you count his messy hair), and he’s slim, very slim, in fact, someone once said his suit jacket “would fit a rat”. These two qualities alone cause him to appear gangly and awkward. His hands are equally long and slim, and slightly discolored from the potent potions he’s come in contact with. He has fluffy, reddish-brown hair that is usually messy due to constant nervous ruffling. His eyes are large and warm, chocolate brown in color, and a bit big for his face. Another feature that’s a bit big for his face is his wide, toothy smile.
Overall he gives the appearance of someone who has slept in his clothes, and just woken up moments ago. His clothes are rumpled and sometimes a bit big for his small body. He wears his ties loosened, if he must wear one at all, and he also tries to get away with wearing an old pair of comfy chucks. Comfort over appearance is the way Beck leans.
For all intensive purposes, Rhys is played by David Tennant's Tenth Doctor (in glasses) XD
Personality
The good professor is pretty private, preferring to keep his feelings to himself. He does get upset easily, but rarely shows it. Instead, he’s apt to run from his problems and brood over them in his office. He can be easily angered, especially by troublemaking students or little injustices. He’s not much of a talker, and tends to communicate non-verbally whenever possible. Although, if one does get him talking, specifically about a subject he’s passionate about (like potions, for instance), he can blather on rather excitedly. Socially, Rhys leaves something to be desired. He’s friendly enough, but is normally not the first to say ‘hi’ to a familiar face. In fact, he’s normally not the first to say ‘hi’ to anyone, and would sooner ignore those around him than interact with them. People tend to make the man nervous.
Infact, a lot of things tend to make the man nervous- heights, small spaces, large empty spaces, large crowded spaces, centipedes, banshees, albinos…you get the idea. Even though he is terribly ashamed of all of these little phobias, he isn’t embarrassed enough to pretend to be able to deal with them, simple because he absolutely cannot. He’d sooner take the next lift than ride one with three others, and nothing makes him tenser than staying in his large, empty house all summer. In fact, that’s usually the reason why Rhys returns to school each year more on edge than usual.
Even though he has his little phobias and nervous ticks, Rhys is far from a coward. That’s not to say he doesn’t get scared- far from it. However, he has a rather hidden bravery that was instilled in him by his mother, throughout his rearing, not to mention a sort of a subconscious death wish, so to speak. In all, despite his average skills with a wand, he would be one of the wizards one would want fighting on one’s side.
His one pleasure in life is teaching, so he focuses most of his energy into his job. At any point in time, if one may need to locate Beck, one’s best bet would be to go to his office, because that is where he spends most of his time (When he’s not teaching, of course). There he pours over lesson plans and homework, or even gives assistance to any students who need it. One might argue he dives into his work with such intensity to keep his thoughts off other things. He would probably agree. Lessons with Professor Rhys are generally interesting ones, despite the sometimes horrid coursework, because he is passionate about what he’s doing, and always attempts to keep the morale up and good humor going. He would call himself strict: He doesn’t like to discipline, but he will to maintain order in the classroom. The faster the work gets done, the more fun can be had, that’s the way he likes to think of it.
Rhys is the epitome of the absent minded professor- his short term memory is definintly not what it once was. He often forgets things like what he needs to buy when he retocks his supplies, or where he left certain things, but he never forgets a name. Regardless of his memory problems, Beck is very intelligent, both logical and open-minded, although insufferably lazy and untidy. His office is in a state of, what he affectionately refers to as, ‘organized chaos’. He prefers it that way, often stating that “If everything is on the floor, then I know exactly where everything is.”
Pre-Incantatem History
Beckett was born to pure blood witch and wizard, Rachel and Gregory Rhys, on October 18th, 1961, in Amble, Scotland. He had a normal childhood, as normal as a wizarding childhood could be, but a long one. That is to say, Beckett took a while to grow up. He was an only child, and therefore (as the story normally goes) he was spoiled. He was mommy’s little boy for 11 years, until he received his acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Little Beck had never been so happy in his life, if not a little apprehensive.
The adjustment from home life to that of boarding school life was made roughly, but made nonetheless. After being sorted into Ravenclaw, it took two years for Beck to finally start to truly enjoy Hogwarts, but when this transformation was made, it changed his entire personality. No more was Beck the naïve, shy, and scared little boy. Well, he was a little less naïve, shy, and scared, but he certainly became very ambitious, ever the studious pupil, although, not much of an athlete. Despite his academic prowess, he never made it to head boy, or even prefect, because of his tendency to be a pushover. He decided resolutely, in his fifth year, that he wanted to be a professor at Hogwarts some day.
Toward the end of his seventh year, his father died. Upon returning home after graduation, his mother implored him to stay at the house, and told him that they could live off of the Rhys family fortune. He refused, citing his dream to become a professor, and left. His mother died shortly after, leaving the fortune to organizations unknown, but leaving their large estate to him. Rhys blamed her death on himself and had a rough time coping with it- for a year he merely wandered his new house in anguish, his dream lost for the time being. However, the rise of Lord Voldemort and his followers changed his attitude greatly, and his new found determination returned him to Hogwarts as Potions Professor.
