Selkrev are an ethnic group in Kirverda.
The group was formed when the Kaldev and mixed Kaldev-Aboriginal colonists in the Red Bank Colony were isolated during the decline of the Coscivian Empire. Left alone, the colonists formed a distinct cultural group, with Kaldev, Aboriginal and unique influences.
Language
Due to their close-knit communities and voluntary isolation, Selkrev Coscivian (A developed form of lower-class Northern Kaldev dialects with some Aboriginal influence) is spoken by nearly all Selkrev as their native tongue.
Bangaal, the Kaldev-Aboriginal creole, is spoken by some 242 Selkrev, most of whom also claim Mêxverd (Mixed Cosciv-Native) affiliation.
The Selkrev are notable for their non-anglophony: Only 3 Selkrev reported having a practical understanding in English in the KE Census, and schools in the Manida Governorate, where most Selkrev live, reported that 100% of all Selkrev students taking English classes failed within three months.
Instead, they speak an obscure dialect of Kadlev Coscivian, though some, mostly of mixed Aboriginal-Cosciv ancestry, speak the Kaldev-Native creole of Bangaal.
External Relations and Stereotypes
With the exception of a few hundred living in the major settlements of Manida Governorate, adult Selkrev rarely have daily contact with members of other ethnic groups. This, and the fact that Selkrev are predominantly village-dwelling or rural lead other Kirverdans to think of them as comparable to the American 'hill-billy'.
Philosophy and Values
Being of Keltican roots, Selkrev values are nearly identical to the Kaldev and Ieurlev: Family, self-sufficiency, and loyalty. They share the general distrust of governmental authority as their forbears, preferring to live in small family groups near other Selkrev. In the 21180 Kirobarometer poll, 52% of Selkrev claimed to be apolitical, while 31% claimed to be right-leaning libertarians.
Selkrev are known to be openly hostile in their attitudes towards the wealthy.
