Akira is one complicated person to try and figure out. He has a sense of loneliness as growing up, he never really had the chance to interact with children his own age. He's a bit socially awkward but has slowly been trying to fix things (which sometimes works, other times simply backfires). He's a smart, very polite, well-mannered young man and generally acts far more mature than someone his age should act (being somewhat of a child prodigy tends not to work well for some). Sometimes he possesses a rather single-minded determination when it comes to certain things (Go, exercising some random point, whatever). On most points he isn't afraid to speak his mind and won't hold back. He can be quite cold and disapproving, but he tries not to let himself display emotions (around Ryuuji is an exception, all things considered). However, if he manages to let things boil over, he usually does his best to quickly recover and go back to being cold and closed off.

As a side note, he has a horrible habit of abusing argyle. (Honestly. The poor kid's idea of casual fashion consists of beige suit pants and an argyle sweater. It really wouldn't be all to surprising to find him wearing a hideous pink one, either.)

Growing up as the son of the great Touya Meijin was never easy. From the time he was old enough to learn how to hold a go stone properly, Akira had been playing the game. Each morning was spent playing a game of Go against his father to continually sharpen his skills. By the time he was in sixth grade, he was more than capable of easily beating amateurs who had been playing the game longer than he had been alive. One day he met another kid by the name of Shindou Hikaru who managed to best him in a game of go and then brush it off like it was beginner's luck. This really sat wrong with Akira and he spent the next months/years trying to find out what the kid was all about. He was obsessive enough to a point that he had been willing to endure ridicule, put up with bullying, and cross several lines. After finally meeting up again for a rematch, Akira was left quite disappointed and finally got fed up enough with it that he joined the ranks of the pros.

He was well on his way of having a great career when during a match his father suddenly fell ill and collapsed. This nearly shattered the boy's world as his father had been such an integral's part of his life (all things considered. He was definitely a lot closer to his father than he had ever been with his mother). His father recovered and decided to take some time off to relax and fully recover. Akira wasn't going to leave him so instead of staying in Tokyo with his mother, he followed his father to Hinamizawa.

Rinali Lee - After the events of cycle 5, Rinali became the sister he never had. She's one of the cornerstones of their little family.
Komui Lee - Komui is the older brother he never had. He cares about the older man as he was there to carry him when he couldn't do so himself.
Itoshiki Majiru - ...his son of sorts.
Otogi Ryuuji - ...don't ask. This one is far too complicated to even begin to think about and Akira, well, he isn't too sure any more.
Lambo - They had a rocky beginning to their friendship, but after being stuck in the same place during the typhoon they learned that the other really isn't all that bad (even if Akira is a bit scary sometimes).
I-Pin - Another of Akira's friends. He met her through Lambo and even though she was L5 in cycle 5, she still spared his life. He hasn't forgotten this and is still grateful.

Cycle 4: He received some change from Sokka so he could use the pay phone. It was also during this time that he met Lambo. Towards the end of the cycle, he met up with an L5 Sokka who killed himself infront of the distraught youth.

Cycle 5: During the typhoon, he was caught at home with Lambo. They learned a few things about one another and formed a sort of friendship. During the festival, he met up with Lambo who introduced him to I-Pin. He joined them for a little bit before ducking off. Later, after Lambo was killed, he again ran into an L5 I-Pin who, after nearly killing him, spared his life and let him go. He ran into Ryuuji and along with Majiru, Rinali, and Komui managed to escape the horrors.
