The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. The Earth and other matter (including other planets, asteroids, meteoroids, comets and dust) orbit the Sun, which by itself accounts for more than 99% of the solar system's mass. Energy from the Sun, in the form of insolation from sunlight, supports almost all life on Earth and other planets via photosynthesis, and drives the all of its planet's climate and weather.

Sol is sometimes referred to as the Sun or by its Greek name Helios. Its astrological and astronomical symbol is a circle with a point at its center. The ancient Greeks grouped the Sun together with the other celestial bodies which moved across the sky, calling them all planets. This was before the acceptance of heliocentrism.

Meaning of the Name

Sol was the name or personification of the Sun in Latin. It can also refer to sunlight, sunbeam, or east in which the direction where the Sun rises.
