DRAW Your Own Story X: The Avatar Wars, also known as DRAW Your Own Story 10 and DYOS X, is the tenth installment of DRAW Your Own Story. The main focus of the story began as a coup-d'état by forumers' retired avatars, eventually evolving into a manhunt for Mr. Toyoda, and climaxing in the search for the "Gem" on the planet Arrakis. DYOS X was the first thread to utilize the DYOS Consul, and as of August 2009 is also the longest-running of the series, at over two years without a major bout of flaming.

The saga began in DYOS X continues in the spin-off thread, DYOS X Part II: Plans Within Plans.

Background

Despite what appeared to be a rejuvenation of the tradition, DYOS 9 ended prematurely due to a fractured plotline and persistent personal conflicts. Having been the fifth consecutive thread to self-destruct, it prompted the forumers to sit down and decide upon a plan for amelioration. The result was the DYOS Consul, the first dedicated attempt to police the thread from within. The consul thread provided a discussion board where the participants could handle conflicts outside the thread proper.

Consequently, DYOS X is the first installment to feature a comprehensive set of rules governing content and forumer interaction. While these have been tested over time, they have maintained some semblance of order in the thread.

Plot

DYOS X suffered periodically from sideplotitus and plotinconsistancitus (usually resolved with a Strikethrough Explanation Comics or a Convenient Plot Device), as well as severe acute hiatus syndrome. Nevertheless, something resembling a coherent plot formed. The story of the Avatar Wars can be divided into sections:

  • The Avatar Uprising - Posters' former avatars rose up against their masters and attempted to take over CivFanatics, led by the Supreme Avatar Commander. The Second Napoleonic War took place at the same time.
  • The Combine Insurgency - The Combines were invited to Earth to help the New Avatar Order but, following kulade's fall, the Combines became the major threat to world peace. While Combine forces fought against Coruscanti and allied troops, a race was on between CivGeneral and Co. and General Grievous to find Mr. Toyoda. At the same time, other concurrent plots were running including the Invasion of Canada and the Zombie menace. Combine power was effectively broken when Coruscanti and FWA forces stormed Fort Schmerzen.
  • Arrakis Expedition - After the Battle of Fort Schmerzen, Mr. Toyoda hired CivGeneral to recover the mysterious "Gem" from Arrakis and bring it back to Earth. Soon, all belligerent parties not on hiatus became involved, and the expedition turned into a race for the Gem. The Battle of Arrakis and the final stand-off in the Gem Chamber ended in a humiliating defeat for the Combine Empire, and the Gem was secured for Mr. Toyoda. DYOS 10 ended with CivGeneral and company leaving Arrakis with the Gem, bound for Earth.

Hacking

The hacking of the CFC upload database in mid-2008 caused many comics in the thread to be permanently deleted. Among the most affected are those by kulade, kill fire, Judge_Deadd and taillesskangaru. Some of these have been reuploaded, but the others are lost. The hacking of Imageshack in 2009 also caused some comics to be permanently or temporarily unavailable.

The hackings provided inspiration for the plot of the next DYOS thread.
