  • 29th - Heavers Meadow, South Norwood (5pm): brief walk round produced 17 species incl. Mallard, Moorhen, Green Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, Swift & Blackcap (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 29th - Riddlesdown: 25+ Skylarks (including one carrying food), 2 pairs of Linnets, 4 House Martins, 3 Swifts, 4+ Stock Doves, Blackcaps, Chifchaffs (one with food), a few Whitethroats, but no sign yet again of Yellowhammers, Meadow Pipits or Willow Warblers this year. (JB)

  • 25th - South Norwood Country Park: 2 Mute Swan, 2 Great Crested Grebe, Sparrowhawk, 3 Kestrel, 3 Stock Dove, Collared Dove, 12 Swift, Lesser Whitethroat, Goldcrest, Coal Tit, Linnet, Reed Bunting (JAH)
  • 23rd - Addington Hills: monthly count (am) produced 23 sp, including Stock Dove (2), G S Woodpecker (4), Song Thrush (8), Blackcap (8), Chiffchaff (4), Goldcrest (1), Coal Tit (6), Nuthatch (2), Treecreeper (2). (John Parish)
  • 21st - South Norwood Lake: (09:00-10:30hrs) pair Great Crested Grebe +1juv, 09:10hrs Common Tern flew onto jetty from N/NE (still on jetty @ 10:30hrs) 20 Tufted Duck, 5 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 8 Swifts, 7 Blackcaps, 4 Chiffchaffs, 1 Mistle Thrush, 3 Song Thrush, 4 Jay, 1 Pied Wagtail, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, 8 House Sparrow, (John Watson)
  • 20th - Pollards Hill South: Grey Wagtail in next doors' flooded basement -as per last summer (MJN)

  • 20th - Croydon Crematorium/Mitcham Common (early am): my 2nd 2012 Breeding Bird Survey included Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Whitethroat, Linnet & Reed Bunting (latter 2 species o/side Croydon area), plus reassuringly healthy numbers of Swifts & House Sparrows (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 19th - Sanderstead: At least 12 Swifts over garden today - the highest count so far this year from here. (JB)

  • 17th - South Norwood Country Park: 2 Mute Swan, Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, Sparrowhawk, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Stock Dove, Coal Tit, Reed Warbler, 2 Linnet, 2 Reed Bunting (JAH)
  • 16th - South Norwood Lake (2pm): 1 Adult (rt foot silver metal-ringed) Common Tern preening/resting on the lakeside jetty for at least 2 hours (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 15th - South Norwood Country Park: 184 Herring Gull flying west, 4 Lesser Black-backed Gull (JAH)
  • 15th - South Norwood Lake (early pm): No sign of the two 2nd brood Gt Crested Grebe chicks which hatched on 9th (the two 1st brood juvs still on lake but acting increasingly independently of their parents, who are now actively bonding (food-passing & calling) again) (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 13th - Lloyd Park (am), monthly count gave 24 sp, including Sparrowhawk (1), Kestrel (1), Stock Dove (13), Parakeet (23), Swift (50+ suddenly appeared at 10:30 and vanished again after 10 min), Blackbird (29), Song Thrush (7), Whitethroat (3), Blackcap (12), Chiffchaff (10), Chaffinch (8), Greenfinch (7).   • 13th - South Norwood Country Park: 2 Mute Swan but, ominously, no sign of cygnet, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Lesser Black-backed Gull, 6 Stock Dove, 48 Swift, Reed Warbler, Willow Warbler, Linnet (JAH)
  • 10th - South Norwood Lake: (09:00-10-40hrs) Great Crested Grebe f with 2 young on back (2nd brood)+2 juv from 1st brood still with adults, 18 Tufted Duck, 1 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 1f Sparrowhawk, 1 Collared Dove, c30 Swifts, 1 Green Woodpecker, 5 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 7 Nuthatch (all calling), 1 Mistle Thrush, 3 Song Thrush, 8 Blackcap, 7 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow Warbler, 15+ Long-tailed Tit, 5 House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Greenfinch (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood)
  • 10th - South Norwood Country Park: 2 Mute Swan + cygnet, Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Pheasant, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull, 2 Stock Dove, 2 Collared Dove, 19 Swift, 3 Reed Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Goldcrest, 2 Linnet (JAH)
  • 9th - Stambourne Woodland Walk, Upper Norwood (11.45am - 12.45pm) (RSPB "Make Your Nature Count" survey): 22 species incl Sparrowhawk (heard), Nuthatch, Coal Tit, party of Goldcrests & 3 singing Blackcaps (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 9th - Kings Road SE25 (05:30hrs) juv Sparrowhawk trying to catch Blackbird (failed) (John Watson)
  • 9th - South Norwood Country Park: 2 Mute Swan + 1 cygnet - a first for the Park, Little Grebe, 2 Great Crested Grebe, 3 Stock Dove, 2 Collared Dove, 2 Swift, 2 Linnet (JAH)
  • 8th - South Norwood Lake (pm): Great Crested Grebes now have 2 2nd brood chicks on back (female), and male still feeding the 2 juvs from previous brood (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 7th - South Norwood Lake (11am): Reed Warbler seen singing in lakeside reed/alder undergrowth nr sailing hut, still second brooding Gt Crested Grebe with 2 new chicks on her back, prob juv Sparrowhawk circling, c40 Swifts, 1 Willow Warbler and usual healthy no. of Blackcaps & Chiffchaffs (Gavin Hawgood)
  • 5th - South Nowood Lake: (09:00-10:45hrs), pair Great Crested Grebe with 2juv, 16 Tufted Duck, 1 Grey Heron (over), 4 Swifts, 1m Sparrowhawk, 1 Collared Dove, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, pair Mistle Thrush +1, 3 Song Thrush, 10 Blackcaps, 5 Chiffchaffs, 1 Willow Warbler, 6 Long-tailed Tit, 5 House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch (John Watson & Gavin Hawgood)

  • 2nd - Pittville Gardens, South Norwood (12pm): Kestrel (prob juvenile) calling from tree along rly embankment for an hour, then flew low towards SNCP (Gavin Hawgood)
