Use all your strength and attempt to lift the manhole cover

You bend low and inspect the manhole cover. There seems to be a little bit of insert for your fingers to slip through, so you reach down and grab, and with all your might you pull. You strain and strain, but it doesn't budge!

"Ow!" you cry out. A sharp pain jolts into your backside and you collapse to the ground. Just then, the bus arrives, and you hurriedly crawl to the sidewalk, though you are in pain. The old man looks at you, appearing to want to help, but the urgency of the bus deflects his thoughts. He stamps out his cigar, and steps up onto the bus. The bus pulls away, and you cry alone.

Somehow this was a turning point in your life. You miss the bus, and you miss out on school. Your life gets distracted by medical expenses for your back, so you never go back to reapplying for school. Somewhere out there was a job just waiting for you and your diploma, and you missed out on both. The rest of your life is a repetitive cycle of debt and misery until you finally kill yourself with a drug overdose.
