The Unicorn and the Raven

From Create Your Own Story

You awake, disoriented and confused, at the base of a great tree. A slight breeze whispers in the leaves and sun shines down between them, down through the branches and mottles the leaves upon which you lay. But something isn't right. The shade of green is strange and the texture of the bark looks peculiar, shiny and almost plastic, and unlike the bark of any tree you've seen before. There's no sound but the wind in the leaves and the soft leaves rustling beneath you as you try to move.

You try to remember what happened, how you got here, but the memory just isn't there. But that's not all. You can't remember who you are or any piece of information about yourself. Its as bad as those anime cliche's... The thought arrives in your mind but then you try to remember what anime is once again your mind comes up with a blank.

Eventually, you unsteadily pull yourself to your feet, leaning against a handy sapling. Your body aches all over and you don't know why but all appendages are accounted for.

Looking around, you see that you're in a forest. The great, strange tree is surrounded by many other, smaller trees, all with the same peculiar leaves and bark. There's a path winding them a short distance away, and on the path-

You see the Unicorn, but at first you don't believe your eyes. It looks like a white horse, its coat somewhat yellowed with dust and mane and tale dangled with small pieces of leaves, branches and other forest detritus. In the center of its forehead is a single horn of iridescent pearl. It's staring straight at you in the most intelligent way you've ever seen in an animal. You sense that it's waiting for you and wants you to follow it.

You start towards the unicorn, overcome with the urge to see where it would lead you when you hear a croaking sound behind you. You turn and see a raven perched on a low branch of the great tree. It wasn't there before. It bobs its head and flutters its wings before flying off to another, smaller tree a few yards away. You sense that it, too, wants you to follow- but in the opposite direction from the unicorn.

When you saw the raven, though, you saw something else as well. There was something wrong with the trunk of the tree, a slight shimmering. You didn't see it before, either, and its not hard to imagine why. Your eye happened to catch it at just the right time, otherwise you never would have noticed. It, too, warrants investigating.
