Meteorite? Wrong.
While traveling across a wide plain, vast desert or even a long disused roadway the PCs see a fiery object falling through the sky. A small meteorite crashes into the ground right in front of them.
It looks like it may be a valuable material of scientific interest. Such as pure platinum or a palasite meteor bespeckled with peridot. But it's not much of a plot hook to drop a bunch of loot in the players’ laps with no strings attached. It's actually an egg from a Lovecraftian horror from beyond the stars.
If the PCs try to break it up or carry it around for a while the egg hatches and releases a horrific monster that defies description. And this thing isn't going to be friendly just because it's young.
The egg shell is still valuable treasure. But probably only standard adventuring fare, not the huge payoff that it might have seemed.
