Early life

Wu Jin Nan, better known simply by the stage name Left, was born in Guangzhou, China, with her twin brother, Wu Jin Fan, and older brother Wu Kai; she would later write songs about both of her siblings. She grew up speaking Chinese as her first language but soon learnt English fluently.

Her father was a war journalist and during her childhood often spent his time working aboard. She recalled the lack of her father figure early in her life but the condition was later improved when he quit the industry due to "excessive boredom" and "noting achievements" and became a taxi-driver instead. There are not much information available about her mother besides the fact she worked as an accountant in her early-twenties before marriage.

Her early introduction to soul music and inspiration to get into the music industry occurred while watching American vocalist Ella Fitzgerald's performance. She was also known to be greatly interested in poetry and the language of French.
