Early life and education

Gain was born in Rastoke of the Croatian municipality of Slunj, the son of Ash Val (née Inga), a financial advisor, and Jahan Lee Gain, an engineer. Shortly after his birth the family left Croatia and as a child, Lee spent several years in South Africa, where his father worked in the oil business; the family later settled down in Wichita Falls, Texas. Gain began attending the Choate Rosemary Hall where he graduated in 2010.

During high school Gain manifested a passion for acting, having participated in several school productions such as Romeo and Juliet and Othello. Upon graduation in 2010, he was accepted by the Juilliard School's Drama Division on full scholarship. Whilst there he acted in several plays, including Julius Caesar and The Close Strangers. In 2014 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
