The family relocated to Tokyo, Japan in 1996 and three years later migrated to Los Angeles County, California, United States where she legally changed her name to Rowina Jeong. As a result she speaks fluent Korean, Japanese and English.
During a family vacation in Seoul to visit her grandparents in February 2013, Jeong was spotted by a talent scout who arranged for her to audition for agents. Her parents were not keen to let her daughter pursue an acting career as she was already enrolled in the University of California, studying for a management degree, but she extended her vocational stay to read for roles. After Jeong's first cold read, the agents opined that her read was the best they had seen from someone without any experience and offered to sign her on. After some consideration over five days, Jeong picked Clumsy Media as actress model Kei Nangon was also an active artist under the agency and their expressed interest in her participating in non-Korean projects.
Career
2013–15: Career beginnings and creation of image
Jeong began her acting career with a minor role in the indie film Our Shunhi (2013). She followed it with a supporting role as a North Korean spy in the controversial war film Red Family (2013) which was directed by the widely debated Kim Ki-duk. The part was universally praised by film critics and led to her being cast in the major television network drama I Hear Your Voice (2013). The critics named Jeong to be a "scene-stealer" in her part and named her as one to watch in the upcoming years due to her praised performance despite the lack of experience.
In 2014, Jeong starred in her second television role and first cable-network show, Gap Dong. The drama was a ratings hit during its entire broadcast period and won several year-end awards and recognition, further raising her the profile and popularity. She was subsequently featured in the historical drama Secret Door which was equally successful and the role won her a Best News Actress award from the annual SBS award ceremony. Jeong expressed her interest in Korean history and thus expressed her desire to act in more dramas of the 'saeguk' genre, influencing her decision to star in the major historical politics drama Splendid Politics (2015). She also starred in her second indie film Remember Me during the same time although it failed to generate the same degree of attention and praise as her previous projects.
2016-2018: Breakthrough and increased popularity
Jeong's breakthrough role came in her fifth drama, the romance fantasy show The Legend of the Blue Sea (2016), based on a best-selling Korean novel of the same name, in which she portrayed a love stricken mermaid. Her performance was acclaimed by professional critics; Han Bin-hyung of Seoul Today said the drama "would be unimaginable with anyone less charismatic" and Lee Yeon-joo of the Nate Reviews opined that "her performance is more than acting, it's a gathering storm. Her performance easily outshines her famous veteran co-stars."
2019-current: Transition into mature roles and critical acclaim
