Anakin Skywalker

From Canonwars

Anakin Skywalker comes from the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy—likely just before his being burned up in a vat of lava because, otherwise, he would have ended up coming in as Darth Vader and it’s highly unlikely that current society would bring Anakin in that way. He is the one who is the great hope to the force, but it only takes his last dying breaths to show this. In many ways, his son Luke is the “new hope,” even if it is Anakin who actually eventually fulfills the prophecy.

Anakin himself is arrogant, brash, and he has a grudge against Obi-Wan a mile long (simply because he believes Obi-Wan is jealous of him and trying to hold him back). Even if he has a part of him that honestly does believe that this isn’t true, his other judgements toward Obi-Wan tend to cloud what actually happens to be the truth. He greatly respects Qui-Gon, even now, and is somewhat disturbed that Qui-Gon’s focus likely remains Obi-Wan, even now.

After all, Anakin believes he is the best and therefore deserves only the best.

Background

Though he eventually becomes overwhelmed by the machinations of the dark side, Anakin’s life did not begin in such a manner. Born to a mother without a known father, he and his mother were fairly selfless (him especially) individuals who served Watto as slaved on Tatooine. Anakin is a prodigy, excelling at engineering and pod racing (which he’s extremely good at) when Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan find him. Though he is past the age of normal Padawans for Jedi, they immediately know that this boy has something special about him.

Indeed, the number of midi-chlorians in him make it seem as if he was a creation of the force, especially since he was born without a father. Though Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are interested in him, Anakin is not allowed to become Qui-Gon’s padawan, given the fact that his future is cloudy and that his time as a slave might end up altering his perceptions. Unfortunately, Qui-Gon ends up dying, and one of his last wishes is for Obi-Wan to train Anakin in the force. The Jedi Council allows this, but very reluctantly. After all, Yodi proclaimed that it could lead to bad things, and if they weren’t capable of recognizing them, it could be bad things for the Jedis themselves. At the same time, Senator Palpatine takes an interest in him, and Queen Amidala maintains her interest in Anakin.

This interest on both parties continues even when Anakin grows up to be an overly proud teenager who believes he is the best in the force. He’s rebellious and often doesn’t listen to Obi-Wan, truthfully believing that Obi-Wan doesn’t wish for him to become a Jedi. However, Anakin is often lead by his heart over his head, which is one of the greatest flaws a Jedi can hold. Often times, Anakin finds himself in places of trouble and he can’t remove himself from them, when Obi-Wan could always just think and it could be handled. He still enjoys flying, and it appears he still likes Padme, but this interest has matured quite a bit.

It truly begins to mature when he has to protect Padme from an assassin, and during this time, the two fall in love. They admit their feelings right before going to save Obi-Wan, and it is in the fight afterward that Anakin loses one of his hands. Each time he does something, he moves closer and closer to being darker, and with the world heading toward a war, it seems as if he will be moving closer to the side of the sith.

Eventually, Padme and Anakin have a secret ceremony and she ends up pregnant. This secret is kept from Obi-Wan for some time, and it is also during this that Palpatine’s approach toward Anakin is more complete. He has Anakin sit the Jedi council and speak his mind, and at the same time, he also lets him know that there is power greater than what the Jedi can offer him—the power to keep someone from dying. Anakin, who loves Padme and his coming children very much, wishes to stop this from happening. In the process, he slowly grows angrier and more jealous, wishing to stop the Jedi from stopping him from reaching his full potential. He ends up aiding in killing a good number of Jedi and Padawans, but in the end, it is his demise that is imminent.

His demise as a Jedi, that is.

He ends up becoming Darth Vader (almost completely shedding the identity of Anakin at this point) and he and Obi-Wan fight for a while before Obi-Wan ends up essentially leaving him for dead. Obi-Wan reveals how much he cared for Anakin during this time. After this fight, Anakin was saved and put into his infamous Darth Vader costume—which was also when he learned his Padme died while having his children. Obviously, Anakin goes on to do a number of horrible things as Darth Vader, but given the tragic occurrences, it is not surprising. He was no longer the selfless Anakin, but a destroyed and evil man wrought with a need for power.

In Purgatory

Anakin has been in Purgatory for some time and has displayed a fair amount of jealousy and brooding around the journals. He is very respectful toward Qui-Gon, but often not to much toward Obi-Wan (as he believes, even now, that Qui-Gon is better). Anakin’s dark side is there, but somewhat stymied because of the presence of Obi-Wan. Him being there helps Anakin somewhat, even if Anakin still believes that he has more hold over the force than anyone else. Or, at the least, deserves more hold.

Most recently, he was involved in the search for Jamie and he’s in the process of building a pod with Warren Mears.
