4: Life and Death

1. Life is a gift, but death is too.

2. In coming, death is cruel but those who are

3. dead are at peace.

4. Do not desire it, but welcome it when it comes.

Commentary: This book talks about the inevitability of death. Death is a phenomenon that nobody can escape. It afflicts all human beings, and in fact, all living things equally. Therefore, death is a thing that cannot be avoided, and must thus be accepted as a natural part of life. Instead of fearing death or worrying about it, people should feel peaceful when it comes, because the natural course is being fulfilled. At the same time, people should not desire or crave for death; if they do, their lives will become meaningless. Only in the case where death actually comes, should people embrace it as something that was meant to happen.
