History

The story of how Koop actually joined the YB is lost to the internet sands. He came along when the Shadow King attempted to invade Star World, during which he met Vivian and instantly fell in love with her. However, when Mr. Game and Watch was injured by a missile, he offered to bring him back to the HQ. He himself was injured in this endeavor, but healed by the newly-arrived Dr. Mario. Around this time he seemed to be wiser than he was letting on, going into spurts of seriousness between his long periods of randomness. These serious spurts were tied more to when he was worried about Anubis.

At one point he went off to find Anubis after he had run off, as he had recently had symptoms of a heart attack. In the forest he came across a group of gray wolves, whom he asked for help from. However, they were enemies of Anubis and as they went to find him their leader attacked Koop. He fled but was cornered and fought for his life; just as the wolf was about to kill him Noshum (an apparent rival for Vivian's affections) appeared and fought off the wolf, then carried the collapsed Koop back to the HQ.

After Koop was healed, he began doing research on Phazon, which had recently begun appearing on Star World. He began work on a way to shield damage from the mutagen. Koop completed a prototype of a rifle that could damage phazon-mutated creatures and a suit that was resistant to phazon, and wanted to bring it on a test-run. He detected a phazon creature lurking about at Yoshi's Island, and some YBs went there to fight it.

The creature turned out to be a monstrous, mutated shy guy. A meteorite made of phazon fell out of the sky and hit the shy guy, mutating it further and increasing its size to thirty feet tall. Koop's inventions were able to damage the shy guy, however, and they incapacitated it. As the shy guy began to calm down, it said that it needed phazon to leave. Koop called for a fast ship to carry the shy guy in via his Golden Shroom, but no one arrived. Another shy guy arrived named Shuy who called the mutated one his sister, Shirl. Koop got an idea and tried to use his inventions to absorb the phazon in Shirl, but they overloaded and exploded.

When Koop awoke, he saw the explosion had thrown phazon about, and some of it had gotten on himself. Anubis arrived and brought them back to the HQ, where Koop placed Shuy in a containment field he had designed. Koop had trouble fighting the phazon, so Anubis knocked him out and entered his mind. Inside there several of Koop's memories were found: Repressed Memories, Loss of Sanity, Father's Dead, Lonelyness, and Greed: Source of Power. Because the Phazon was in there and nearly attacked Anubis, though, Koop threw him out and told him to use the phazon rifles to get the phazon out.

Anubis succeeded in getting Koop into his containment machine and curing him and Shuy of the phazon. Then with PB's help they determined who had attacked the HQ and mutated the oho jee, Space Pirates. He and Shuy went off to find them, but stopped at Yoshi's Island where another phazon-mutated creature was. This creature was a giant mutated Whacka; after it was weakened they followed it to find a large storage of phazon on the island underground; it was a Space Pirate base, and they were mining phazon.

Just as they found a large storage of it, a phazon-mutated yoshi broke in. After getting a few shots in with the phazon rifles, the phazon-yoshi called for help and a gigantic phazon-mutated wayoshi appeared. The damage from the phazon-wayoshi caused the base to collapse and they had to escape. Koop was unable to get out in time, and was trapped underground with Shuy. They came across a room still with power, and found a device that could teleport people using light particles. The device had teleported them to a large crater with phazon in the air, and Koop used the device to upgrade the Golden Shrooms and were teleported to the location of some other YBs.

After Koop reached the surface of Yoshi's Island, the phazon-yoshi and phazon-wayoshi attacked again. Koop's phazon weaponry was damaged and he had to retreat back to the HQ. He and Shuy remembered there was another island with a large detection of phazon there, so Koop went off on a hoverbike to investigate. Around this time a vast phazon rain began across the planet, but Koop didn't let it deter him. As the rain begins, Koop decides that he would fight fire with fire. He allows the rain to infect him.

Koop arrived at the crater and found a 70-foot long cobra creature: Sango, the Titan of Thunder, in the body of a cobra combined with a Metroid Prime. Sango ate Koop, but after the YB arrived and attacked him he vomited Koop up, now a huge spike-shelled koopa. He nearly attacked PB but instead spewed out Anubis, who had been eaten by Sango earlier. He then tried to attack PB, but Sango began to absorb all the nearby phazon, including sucking it out of Koop. After Sango was destroyed by Anubis, Koop awoke and returned to his usual loony self.

Not long after a thousand goombas appeared, bowing to Koop as the onion god. He took the position with integrity, calling the goombas dirty diapers and taking all their money. He also had them build a statue of Vivian out of onions. A slightly more lasting result of the goombas was a new ship Koop had designed and had them build, called the K-iller.

Eventually Koop remembered what happened before he had joined the YB--that he had gone to get some bread for his mother, and then somehow forgot. This was unfortunate, as his mother was scary when angry, so he flew to Petalburg--apparently his hometown--but found his home to be trashed. In the backyard he found his brother, Phried-D, trapped in a hole, who explained some thugs had arrived and kidnapped their mother and siblings. Koop used KUC to scan Phried-D's mind and determined the kidnappers were some koopas calling themselves "K-Nauts".

Koop received a call from the kidnappers demanding an unspecified treasure, and KUC traced the call to Shhwonk Fortress. They encountered a koopa calling himself Lord Krump, and after he fled they went into the fortress to rescue Cries. After doing so Cries informed Koop that the location of the twins, Statico and Carpet, was Keelhaul Key. There they broke into Pirate's Grotto and found Captain Cortez's ship stranded inside the cave again. Cortez willingly gave them the twins, but they noticed Cortez had someone else locked up as well, a Grovyle named Zar. They mostly ignored him at first until Zar revealed he had heard of Koop through someone he knew--Az.

They made a deal with Cortez to locate his stolen skull gem in exchange for Zar's freedom, and in a burst of randomness Koop suggested that they search under Top's hat. An entire town opened up to them under Top's hat, and inside they found the skull gem thief, Popple. After taking back the skull gem and capturing Popple, Carpet revealed Popple had been working for the K-Nauts and knew where their other siblings were. Popple revealed one of Koop's siblings was in Top's Hat Town, who Koop identified as Elizabeth and rushed back into the town.

Within the town they found a locked door with Koop's sibling behind it, and suspected that Popple had the key. When they emerged from the town, though, they were back in the YB HQ, Top having moved from Cortez's ship to there in the meantime. Zar left to find Koop's brothers, but instead found Anubis, who had learned that Az was in trouble on a journey. Anubis left to help Az, while Koop went off to locate his family. He eventually did, and then returned to the YB HQ as they received a message from Anubis and Az to come to Koholint Isle on Hylia. They arrive on the planet, learn how to reach Koholint, and sail on a wooden ship to the island.

Along the way they're caught in a storm and thrown overboard; they landed on Koholint and met up with Az and Anubis. They learned from an owl that shadows had invaded the island, and that they needed to open the giant egg on the mountain by finding eight instruments. They traveled through a cave to locate the first instrument, a cello that Koop determined he could play. After this, though, a coyote named Mermus began trying to gather the instruments as well; both sides had found two instruments when the YBs took a break at a village.

While Koop was reading in the village library, a koopa similar to himself appeared--an opposite version of himself from another universe named Kopo. Anubis then returned after disappearing for a time, bearing the last six instruments. They then traveled up the mountain, played their instruments, fought against their opposite-counterparts and made it back to the real world.

Koopernicus' Universal Computer

This was a thing.

Trivia

  • "That's because my brain overloads with thoughts and I explode in a fit of randomness and destruction very often. Can't you tell?" I wonder if this explanation is canon.
  • Koop's nickname is Whitey, because of his white hair, and Onio, because of onions. His real name is apparently not Koopernicus, but it is never stated what his real name is.
