JOHN TAIT

Was born in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, September 12, 1832, where his father was engaged in farming. In 1838, his parents emigrating to America, our subject with his brother was taken across the Atlantic, and finally went to Chicago where they arrived on Independence Day of that year. From there, however, the family removed to Lake county, Illinois whence in 1842, they moved to the Will county and located near Joliet. In 1851, Mr. Tait proceeded to the gold-fields of California, where he followed mining for six years, when, in 1857, returning to Illinois, he engaged in farming and continued in agricultural pursuits until April, 1876, at which time he came to Oregon, first located in Albany, but, June 14, 1876, purchased his present farm of four hundred acres, situated three miles south from Creswell, where he now resides. An excellent view of the residence and its surroundings appears in another portion of this volume. Mr. Tait married in Frankfort, Will county, Illinois, January 5, 1860, Miss Eliza J. Owen, and has a family consisting of four children, viz: John L., born February 18, 1864; Arthur B., born January 4, 1867; William W., born June 22, 1870; Bertha E., August 19, 1877. Mr. Tait is a true representative of the hardy Scotch-Norseman, possessing all the characteristics that go to make a man honored by the community in which he dwells.
