"A woman pedestrian was struck by an automobile and killed Saturday night as she walked along East Main St. in Springfield. She was identified by the coroner as Mrs. Laura McAfee Brockman, about 70, of 407 1/2 N. 25th St. The accident happened shortly after 7 p.m., about 20 feet inside the city limits. Officers said visibility was poor because of rain and darkness. The victim was wearing a black raincoat. Raymond Glenn McMullen, driver of the car, told police that Mrs. Brockman was walking in the lane of traffic. He said he saw her too late to avoid hitting her. Police Chief Harry Howard said no charges would be filed against McMullen. His home is at 143 Tomahawk Ln., Eugene. Howard said Mrs. Brockman was walking toward the city, with her back toward oncoming traffic. He said there were no sidewalks nor street lights at the point of the accident. Mrs. Brockman was dead by the time an ambulance reached the scene. The body was taken to the Bartholomew-Buell Chapel in Springfield."
