Beginning at the turn of the century, agriculture in the region was characterized by a diversification of crops and an increase in the number of farms with smaller acreages (Highsmith 1950:55-58). Large-scale farming was also on the rise. By about 1893, Frank Chase, the originator of Chase Gardens, was growing commercial vegetable crops and had planted a fruit orchard of prune, apple and cherry trees just west of Springfield. He began building greenhouses for some of his vegetables in 1895 (Chase 1964:12).
