HC/Negotiate with the boy

'Okay,' you say. 'I'll take the fall for it.'
'What?!'
'I'll say it was me,' you say firmly. 'I'll say you went to the back room for a bit and I started messing around with the scissors. When you came back you did your best to fix it.' The boy looks at you in horror. 'But then you'll be punished for it too,' he says.
'I don't care,' you tell him. 'I just want to get at her, that's all.' He stares at you for a bit. You have the feeling he's trying to figure you out. 'Okay,' he says finally. 'But I'm not going to do it very short. I'll leave about a foot of hair.'
'No way!' you say angrily. 'You're missing the whole point. A centimetre at most.'
The boy shakes his head. 'I'm not doing it that short. A foot at least.' You both stare at each other, neither of you willing to back down. Maybe you can think of something different or negotiate a bit further.
