You walk out into the Great Hall and take your seat on the Ember Throne. It glitters with gold and washes the room with specks of red light as the sun reflects off the fire opal gems.
The extravagant Great Hall of Ausdauer speaks to a time when Joslund owned much of the continent. Its halls are glorious to behold. Those halcyon days are long past.All your ministers are gathered here for this day, as well as many Dukes and most of the Counts. The Marquis are defending the borders.
The state is in crisis. Ambitious neighbors have begun to swallow the final bits of its territory on all sides in the last century.
To the north is Belklund, a frigid land always wishing to expand south to warmer climes since the days of old. Their people are on average a foot taller than the people in Joslund. Frightful!
To the east is Hunneriz, a vast empire constantly acquiring new land to match the size of an even vaster rival to the mysterious east. They come from a lineage of horse nomads, but have recently settled down into cities. However, their unruly populace constantly plunders along the eastern border.
To the south, beyond the Strait of Blood, is Yordanne. It used to be an impoverished state, but have recently gained international prestige and renown for its unmatched navy. Through naval power they have increased their land tenfold in the last 200 years, possessing trading posts and colonies around the world.
To the west is Welyn, a small but powerful nation on this hostile continent. They recently professionalized their small army in order to maximize the efficiency of every man. The result is a speedy conquest of its neighbors by coercion or by outright force. Are we next?
We are currently at war with Belklund. A moment of weakness, however, and it is likely that the other three states will descend upon us in a race for land and loot.
Your father entrusted your care to Chancellor Ingsbruck, an experienced advisor with over 30 years of experience managing the state.
He states, “Announcing Elenora the First, of the divine lineage of Ravenwald, Queen of Joslund. The most pressing concern is the siege of Castle Arngard to the north by the savage Belklund armies. Secondary concerns include a budgetary problem, and a potential four front war with the other three states on our borders. How shall we proceed?”
