You knock loudly on the inside of the door. Maria walks over and pretends to open it. "Cousin Josie!" she says with enthusiasm. "Your mom has been worried sick about you. I'm talking to her right now, actually!"
You take the phone from your cousin. "Hi, Mom!" you say.
The relief in your mother's voice is palpable. "Thank God you're safe. Why did you leave?"
"Ask Alex," you snap. "The little perv has been sneaking pictures of me and last night he tried to assault me. I'm not staying anywhere near that bastard. You and Colin are welcome to visit me here, but if I see Alex again I will rip his dick off and beat him to death with it."
"Wow," Mom says. "I guess this means you're not coming back."
"I'll be fine here," you say. "I'm sure Maria will --"
"Yes, she will," Mom says. "She told me just before you arrived she'd be willing to take you in."
"Then it's settled," you say. "Don't worry about me. I'll be all right."
Your mom hangs up, clearly much happier than she was 20 minutes ago, and you smile at your cousin.
Maria gestures wordlessly for you to come to her welcoming embrace.
