The Echidna Tale/The Pixie

From Create Your Own Story

Back during the Age of Monsters, people whispered of two faerie courts: the seelie and the unseelie, both ruled by the queen of the fairies. The seelie court was the court of the summer, the court of the day: its members were innocent and childish, albeit selfish and prone to tricks and kidnappings. The unseelie was the court of the winter, the court of the night: the unseelie were cruel and evil who loved nothing more than causing great harm with the wicked pranks they played on innocents. The queen of the fairies herself was depicted as mighty and uncaring, neither good nor evil, letting both of the courts run free and do what they wanted.

Most of this is true. However, you were the real queen of the fairies: as the mother of monsters, you had spawned the fey in addition to all other monstrous creatures across the lands. The uncaring part was not true, and you feel quite offended that people might suggest that. In reality, you truly did care about your fey children. So much, in fact, that you simply let them run amock and do whatever they pleased.

The pixies were the most common kind of a fey. They were young girls with butterfly wings, creatures of pure joy, created from mortal children entering a faerie spring; a magical pool that would transform them into one of the fair folk. Pixies had an affinity for illusions and enchantments: they could make people see things that do not exist, turn themselves invisible and charm people, making them fall in love with them.

The seelie pixies were childish creatures full of warmth and sunshine, doing nothing but playing, eating or sleeping. They tended to love humans, especially human children, and they often disguised themselves as ones to play with them. If they took a strong fancy for some child, they'd abduct them, sometimes even taking them into a faerie spring and turning them into their eternal playmates. They did not think of this as an evil fact, since they felt they were doing a favour for them.

The unseelie pixies were also childish, but much more hateful and intelligent. Not getting along very well with their seelie counterparts, they often harassed them in cruel ways. If no seelie fey were available, they turned their eyes towards human settlements, performing malicious pranks on them. They, too, abducted human children: not out of love, but rather for the sake of making them their slaves. A newly born unseelie pixie was completely in control of the one who had helped them to be spawned. It's not that they didn't feel affection, but their innately corrupted nature made it manifest in sometimes quite horrible ways.

You always found both of the pixie-kind very amusing. Recreating both of them was an idea that interested you greatly. But where to start?
