Carlos grins broadly. And half drags you down the stairs and into the kitchen. He begins making chestnut soup, adding unnecessary flourishes to the preparation -- going so far as to toss the veggies into the air and catch them in to pot. He makes you giggle and clap. You’re really enjoying yourself with the big tight end. Whatever that is. When he’s done, Carlos sets a bowl in front of you. “Careful it’s hot.”
You eat a spoonful and immediately praise Carlos for his cooking ability. Carlos bows and sits next to you. The two of you chat a bit and you find out Carlos, like most bullies, is only as mean as he is because his dad puts a lot of pressure on him. He tells you he always feels bad about picking on you and he promises not to do it anymore. He even says he’ll try to get the rest of the team to do the same. He rubs your hair affectionately. Looks like you’ve gained another guardian. Maybe even another friend.
Your phone goes off a minute after you finish eating and you see a notification that the new episode of your favorite show is about to come on. Carlos sees it and says he’ll watch it with you if you want, so you don’t miss the beginning. You live a block away and would probably only miss the first five minutes of the hour long show.
