You are paired up with JT, Hondo, Blackie and Strike. The other team is Sparkplug, Genie, Carlos, Fife and Laser. You suspect that not all of those are the names the players were given on their birth certificates.

The game is to 21, each basket being worth 1 point. You are assigned to guard Carlos. You do so effectively, limiting him to 2 baskets while making 7 out of 9 shots yourself. Unfortunately, Laser has the accuracy of one, and he makes 10 shots including the game winner. Your team loses 21-19.

"Good game, Mute," the players say afterwards. "You're welcome back any time with shooting like that."

You nod, smile and wave, then settle in a shady spot to rest your legs.

As the afternoon draws on, you slip away to the outskirts of the city and eat more deer brains, then wash up. You spend the night asleep in the crook of a tree. The sun's rays wake you the next morning.
