Your wife takes a long time to think things over and all you can do is wait. Your new plan is very different from the original and you know she needs time to think about it. You want to say something to prove your case even further, but know nothing you say will matter. If your wife refuses, then there is nothing else that can be said. You laid everything out as best you could.

After what seemed hours to you, though only a matter of minutes, your wife looks at you and says, "We can't. I could never purposely cause her pain to get what we want and neither can you. I know you are desperate to find some way of fixing this whole mess, but we can't do that to our daughter."

You know she is right and say, "It was a crazy idea to begin with and your right. Neither of us could do anything like that."

Wilma smiles for the first time in a long while and says, "The plan may be fucked, but at least you have me, daddy."

You smile back at your wife and say, "That's very true, Nancy. I do have my daughter already."

You are never able to make fantasy a reality, just like you are never able to get your daughter to take more responsibility. Nancy moved out a short time later and took a job elsewhere.
