"Did you ever want to have sex with someone you weren't supposed to?" you ask.
"That is quite a daring question," Julianne says. "What made you bring this subject about?"
"I don't know," you answer. "I'm just curious. You didn't have a new boyfriend since dad left. I thought you could have met someone married..."
"There may be someone," she says, "but I cannot... act."
"Why? Is he married?"
"No, that person is not married. There are other difficulties."
"So you never tried? What if that person responded well on your advances?"
Julianne doesn't answer. After a while, you assume she fell asleep. Half asleep yourself, you hear her whisper a good time later: "There are too many what ifs. I shan't."
"You don't have to go like the bull at the gate. Just dip a foot in the water?"
Julianne puts a kiss on your forehead. You drift away, uncertain if your mum did say something after that.
