Downfall/Ask - who knows how long you'll have to wait

From Create Your Own Story

"So... mum?"

"Yes? What is it, sweetie?"

"About earlier. What kind of things did you do when you were young?"

Your mother looks surprised. "Debra, this really isn't the time."

"Oh, right - I forgot that you had urgent things to do just now," you say as innocently as you can.

She has to laugh. "Oh, I shall regret the day I told you about this, shall I?" She looks around; nobody is close enough to overhear you. Due to the late hour, the airport is less frequented, and you are sitting in a secluded area. Julianne sighs.

"Well, one night when your grandparents were away, I thought it would be a great idea to go skinny dipping in the pool."

"When did Grandpa's house have a pool?" you ask.

"No, they never had a pool. The next-next door neighbors have a pool."

"The Henessies? Oh, yes."

"Well, yes. The garden fences were just as low as they are now; they were easy to climb over. The Henessies were away as well, only the neighbors next door were home. And I was young enough - that means foolish enough - not to think of the consequences. I just wanted to have a swim, so I went over there. Naked." Your facial expression must have been a sight to behold, as Julianne laughs again. "I told you."

"You didn't undress at the pool? I can't believe it."

"In hindsight, it was a stupid idea. But sometimes, you don't think things through. Right?" She winks at you. "I didn't think much about it until a squad car pulled over at the front. Someone heard the splashing and called the cops. Believe me, I was out of the pool and over the fence in world record time. And guess what?"

"What?"

"When I got to our house, the back door was closed. The door snapped shut, and I was outside, stark naked."

"Noooooo."

"Oh yes. I had my window open - thank god for that - but the ladder was in the garage. And to get into the garage, I had to wait until the cops ended their inspection. The longest five minutes of my entire life. Ever since I-"

"Ever since what?"

Julianne shakes her head. "No no no. Nothing, sweetie. Just learn the lesson from the story, will you?"

You nod. Who would have thought...?

Another two hours and as many inquiries later, the airline calls you to come to their counter. Your luggage has been found. Unfortunately, it has been found at another airport. Nobody is able to explain why, but two out of four pieces of luggage you checked went in another direction. It's no use yelling at the attendants; as much as your mother does, it doesn't make your bags appear. The service people assure you the luggage will arrive next midmorning. As consolation, you are offered two coupons for a wellness treatment at a well-known spa. Julianne looks like she wants to tear the coupons into a thousand pieces, but you persuade her to accept them. Even though it is hardly a compensation for the additional trouble, it is at least something.

At this hour, the shuttle serves only every half hour, and the bus has just passed through. A large crowd assembles during the waiting time. When the next shuttle arrives, you manage to secure a two-seater in the back. Exhausted from the day's stress, Julianne leans against you, her eyes closed. You let her rest until you reach your hotel.
