"No, I'm okay, I'll stay on duty"

"No, I'm okay, Cap...I mean Nina," you say. "I've had to do things like that before...This isn't my first rodeo."
Nina nods. "Keep at it, then. And once again, good work." She goes off to check on some other soldiers.
The scientist you saved introduces himself as Dr. Ryan Murray. He thanks you again for violating protocol to save his life, then gets back to his work. You do too.
The next few days are more of the same routine. You frequently volunteer for duty inside the quarantine rooms, wanting to make up for the lives you couldn't save, and kill many zombies after test after test fails to turn them human.
One day, the chain snaps again while you're in a quarantine room. You quickly shoot all the zombies dead with your pistol, but not before one of them bites your ankle. You look down, shaking. This can't be happening.
"I'm sorry, Marina," comes Nina's voice from outside.
"Wait," says another voice. It's Ryan. He is holding a syringe in his hand. "I have an experimental formula. It's a long shot, but..."
"What have I got to lose," you finish for him.
