Time Travel In The Game

Duplicating

The player can create temporary duplicates of themselves by jumping back in time. This is used to: hit multiple switches at once, provide covering fire during combat, allowing you to concentrate fire on more power enemies, help with moving larger objects, etc.

Pausing

Pausing the game world temporally but still being able to interact with it.

Rewinding

Rewind to correct mistakes or to retry a challenge

Fast Forward

Fast Forward to speed up the game world to help solve puzzle quickly and keep the pace going

Combat

Combat in the game is split into two key varieties and players will have access to combat focused abilities.

Against normal enemies

Where your time travel abilities give you the edge. Allowing you to manipulate the game world to your advantage. Such as freezing time to get the jump on enemies or creating duplicates of yourself to aid you in combat.

Against Fellow Time Travellers

These come from the two waring factions of the game's story. These enemies will have some or all of the time travel abilities you have access to. Boss like encounters with enemy time travellers concentrating on a specific ability or set of abilities.

Note that any time travel performed by an enemy will not be perceived by the player. You will see the effects rather than the cause or the sequence leading up to it. An enemy who pauses time to flank the player will blink out of existence then suddenly reappear elsewhere. This turns combat itself into a puzzle where the player will have to think on their feet to out smart the opposing time traveller

Combat Specific Time Travel Abilities

Players will also have access to time travel abilities geared around combat. The base set will be made up of combat varieties of the player's main abilities but players will also unlock additional abilities such as being able to age/de-age a chosen enemy to death in a time bubble.

Couple these abilities with weapons (guns, swords, bows, etc) and objects players will acquire over the length of the game (futuristic gadgets and other devices) and players will have access to a wide variety of powers combinations and tactics.

Game Structure & Tone

The game will follow a over-arching linear structure with each level/mission leading onto the next. Variety will come in the gameplay opportunities offered to the player and each level/mission will offer a certain level of freedom in how it can be completed.

The game itself will be lighthearted in tone and not take itself to seriously. Time Travel by its very nature is open to a wide variety of ideas and theories that could bog the game down by forcing it to explain itself. For the player it should be a case of time travel works because it just works. Also there are lots of opportunities for comedy when it comes to time travel.
