Vadalian Royal Guard

From Storing Don

The Vadalian Royal Guard is by far the most skilled military unit in Vadal. They are trained primarily as infantry for land-based warfare, although they are excellent marines and more than capable of boarding and capturing enemy ships. Spell casters make up roughly half of the Royal Guard, which allows it to respond to both kinds of soldiers.

The Vadalian Royal Guard is usually transported by the Royal Navy, but if both groups are needed in a single area, the Royal Guard has 30 galleons, which are faster and tougher than other ships, given superior Vadalian crews and construction.

[edit] Royal Guard Tactics

The Royal Guard is, as suits an elite unit, very flexible - they are capable of being a hammer or a scalpel. They usually operate in the standard fashion of units. Large blocks of one thousand men, split evenly among the classes, march along in a fairly lose fashion. Depending on the conditions of the battle, they blocks will separate into groups of five hundred, one hundred, and even twenty five. They can also thicken for receiving or making charges. They are trained for conventional battlegrounds and are best on clear ground, as the Raiders are better light troops and are thus used as guerrilla warriors as the situation demands.

[edit] Ranks in the Royal Guard

The first rank is, obviously, Soldier. Soldiers are the entry level rank into the Royal Guard, and can be marked on the battlefield by their lack of insignia. The rank above Soldier is Bannerman, and it is the only NCO rank of the Vadalian Royal Guard. Each Bannerman controls a group of twenty five, and are marked by the fact that they hold the banner of the group in a small holster attached to their back. The lowest ranking officer, the Hertik, controls a group of one hundred, and are marked by a silver sword brooch. Five Hertiks report to a Freiher, who is marked by the golden sword brooch. Two Freihers are under the command of a Hauld, who are marked by their silver dragon brooches. There are six generals, each of whom controls five Hauld - the Generals of the Royal Guard are equal to a Jarl in rank, and their insignia is the golden dragon brooch, as well as a bright orange cloak.

The Royal Guard is under the direct command of the High Prince, and are as loyal to him as possible by espirit de corps as well as land grants and other rewards.
