"You were always second best. And in this business, bub, second best don't cut it."

The X-Men are one of the greatest superhero teams of all time.

[edit] Members

The X-Men consist of students at Prof. Charles Xavier's School for Mutants. They are all mutants (Homo superior, according to Magneto): people born with mutations that granted them powers. Among the X-Men are:

  • Prof. X, a wheelchair-bound telepath.
  • Cyclops, who shoots lasers from his eyes.
  • Jean Grey, who has incredible psychic powers.
  • Wolverine, who has adamantine claws and healing powers.
  • Beast, who has blue hair all over his body.
  • Iceman, who can create ice.
  • Rogue, who can absorb other mutants' powers.
  • Gambit, who can transform matter into kinetic energy.
  • Jubilee, who can make fireworks.
  • Archangel, who has wings.
  • And many others.

[edit] Enemies

Since the X-Men are a superhero team, a student body, and embroiled in political turmoil, they have lots of enemies on all sides. Their archenemy is Magneto, who was once Prof. X's closest friend. He leads the Brotherhood of Mutants. Other enemies include:

  • Mystique, an ally of Magneto.
  • Juggernaut, Prof. X's unstoppable half-brother.
  • The Sentinels, giant robot mutant-killers.
  • The U.S. government, on many occasions.
  • Apocalypse, who kind of embodies the end of the world.
  • Sabretooth, Wolverine's personal archenemy.

[edit] Conflicts

The X-Men are pretty much always fighting Magneto. Except that one time he turned good and fought with them. Or the few occasions when he's joined with them to fight an even greater common enemy. Magneto wants mutants to break away from normal people, but the X-Men feel that they should live in peace. So that's a perpetual source of conflict.

However, many normal people feel the same way- including plenty of higher-ups in the government and the military-industrial complex. Hence the race riots, ghettos, and Sentinels.

Apocalypse has always been a pretty major enemy. It was he that led to the dystopian Age of Apocalypse, and he caused a few other fairly severe problems as well.

Then there was the time Jean Grey became the Phoenix...
