The Armed Defense Forces of the PSSO were formed in 1988 from Soviet Troops and equipment stationed on its soil.

The stated mission of the Armed Defense Forces of the PSSO is to defend national security and interests wherever required. The PSSO is a member of the Partnership for Peace Program started in the early 1990s and has large ties to the Krimiean Military, a fellow Black Sea Socialist Republic. A large contingent of troops remained based in the PMPR controversially, after the intervention in that nation's civil war in the early 1990s and subsequent defeat of capitalist forces.
