History

Yrjänägrød was founded on May 27th, 1136, after the conclusion of the Monarchist Revolution. After the battles that had ensued in Arëdighùan during the revolution, newly cronwed Righ-Kesjare Yrjänä felt it prudent to establish a new base of power, far away from where the Republic had been centered, and still farther away from the old Norric bastions of power; Yrjänä wanted something independant and new, that could add to the nationalism for his new country.

Yrjänä knew that if he was to rule effectivly he had to have a secure fortress from which to do so, so he had his royal engineers draw up plans for a grand castle and fortress, to rival anything the world had seen. Having seen the innumerable cannals of Valentin, and the great stoneworks of Elimnu, he deiceded to incorperate both into his new, mighty city.

To realize his grand vision, the land where the city would be built would have to be greatly changed. For this change he would need workers; luckily for him during the civil war, his troops had taken great numbers of prisioners. Seeing an oppurtunity to rid himself of his opposition, and achieve his goals at the same time, he gathered 40,000 of the close to quater of a million prisioners taken in the war, and used them as slave labour in the project.

Whole islands and rivers were created and re-routed to suite the needs of the city, Yrjänä is commonly quoted to have said "Let the winds of dispair haunt you for nought, the will of the mighty One is with us. Our city shall be the becon of light of the world, and I, its lantern keeper."

The inner city was designed as a fortress where ships could travel inwards in the event of a hostile navy on the outside, so many cannals were created to facilitate this. Great canyons were dug, and the dirt used as fill for many of the roads and buildings popping up in carefully planned avenues across the city.

It took nearly ten years, and nearly 20,000 dead slave labourers to complete the project but by 1148 he had completed his mighty, project, and took his throne at the mighty Vakksjøside Palace.

During the decades and new rulers to follow, Yrjänägrød was further integrated as an intergral part of Arëdighùan. It was made to be the center of economic, cultural, and military power for the entire nation.
