"hour forward"s transition- There's no conventional way for the protagonist to know the exact year yet, but obviously he should be stricken by the alien environment he's now found himself in. The robot could just wake him up and scare the crap out of him.

I like where this is going, and feel that it's just a few steps away from an epic story explaining the watch, a la Chrono Trigger. Definitely starting my list of "stories to expand." -NightChime 11:58, 19 October 2009 (PDT)
