D&D: Check the bulletin boards for outstanding bounties or wanted posters.

From Create Your Own Story

You strap on a rapier, your quiver of hand-fletched arrows, and a small bag of various survival bits and bobs - a water flask, some simple biscuits, a vial of healing potion, a general antivenom, some bandages, and, tied to the bottom of the bag, about ten feet of rope skillfully curled up into the smallest space possible. To top it all off, you slip a hunting knife into your belt, and head out to the nearest bulletin board. The nearest board stands outside a modestly successful curiosities store, notorious for the wildly varying natures of the items it sells. Sometimes an enchanted trinket winds up in some hapless shopper's hands bringing them good luck. Other times it inadvertently passes off someone's old curse onto an unfortunate patron. Rumor would have it that one man wound up immolated the moment he opened a music box he had bought for a friend's wedding, but no one could ever verify that tale.

The board was covered in bounties. Evidently it was a busy week for the city guard. Nothing especially outstanding caught your eyes. Most of the bounties were for petty thieves rumored to be the street arm of a loosely organized criminal ring based in Skullport, but as tempting as tackling something that big was, the coin for each individual listed was too small to catch your attention. Still, that also meant they'd be relatively easy marks for someone with your talents.

Finally, something sticks out; an unusual reward posted for the collection of a fairly exotic plant for an alchemy shop. You weren't familiar with the plant, but the instructions provided were quite explicit. Nothing about it seemed dangerous. The plant grows only in certain clearings in the forests outside the city walls. The high reward made you suspicious, but that much coin for a few plants was a very tasty prospect.

Right next to that bill was another interesting prospect, a moderate bounty on a lost heirloom. The poster didn't offer much information, only where to meet the petitioner and how much coin he or she was willing to fork over to get this thing recovered. It was an unusual post that piqued your curiosity.
