Mello (13 December 1989) is a character in the anime/manga series Death Note. He is another character who attempts to bring down Kira and reign in the power of the Death Note. However, unlike L and Near, Mello has no problem operating outside of the law. Working with the mafia, he engages in serious crime in order to catch Yagami Raito first. Compared to his former classmate, Mello is a great deal more unpredictable and focuses on actions- while Near focuses more on calculations. After Mello dies, Near acknowledges that the two of them could have only surpassed L together, which was probably why a successor was never picked.

Information
Background
Mello (real name Mihael Kheel) grew up in the Wammy house, an institution that turned orphans into geniuses. Essentially, each student was groomed to become the next L, a former student who was working on capturing Kira (Yagami Raito) a serial killer with a god complex. While Mello was extremely intelligent, he would often get carried away with his emotions. Because of this, the more rational Near consistently came in first place, while Mello came in second. This bred a strong inferiority complex, and Mello’s (somewhat imagined) rivalry with Near. When L was killed, the man named no successor to his cause, and the rivals were offered the chance to work together to defeat Kira. Mello vehemently declined and left the house.
Five years after L's death, Mello reemerges with a unscrupulous gang working under him to capture Kira. He intends to prove himself by capturing Kira before Near, who has formally taken over L's post. To do this, Mello has no problem with become a criminal himself, eventually kidnapping Raito's sister and killing Police Chief Yagami (Raito's father) as part of his efforts. However, he's still so preoccupied with beating Near that he often hinders his own success. Towards the end of the series, Mello unexpectedly puts aside his pride to work within Near's final plan. Mello sacrifices himself for the cause, and Near is able to catch Raito.
In Purgatory
Arriving after his death, Mello met with his former mentor L, rival Near and Yagami Raito. He's not happy with this at all, and will likely be less so when he finds out more about L's inventive tactics with Kira. He doesn't live with the other Death Note characters, and stops by only when it's demanded of him. Don't let the candy and dress-up drag queen coat fool you, he considers himself an adult. Out of the four men, he's the most likely to shoot you.
