The SimCup III is the third staging of the SimCup tournaments held in Newport. Newport took over the SimCup competion due to Sutherway's inability to host the event because of construction delays and other priorities. Newport was very excited to once again host a monumental event since the first tournament, SimCup I, was also held in the country.

This tournament is also a first as the host invited nations from the SCJU to participate in order to promote the AU-SCJU Alliance. It was also mentioned that the lack of union members was also the cause for the invitation.

SCJU Disqualification

Due to the termination of the AU-SCJU Alliance on February 8, 2008 by the SCJU Security Council, the SCJU teams participating in the tournament were immediately disqualified for violating the law which requires a nation to be either part of the Adrian Union or an Adrian Union ally in order to take part in the event. The disqualification recieved heavy criticism from both the SCJU and AU fans as both supporters were looking forward to the elimination stage of the tournament. On the other hand, most the fans of the countries that replaced the disqualified teams were thrilled.

Knockout Stage

The knockout stage was a single-elimination tournament involving the eight teams that qualified from the group stage of the tournament. There were three rounds of matches, with each round eliminating half of the teams entering that round. The successive rounds were: Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, Final. There was also a play-off to decide third/fourth place. For each game in the knockout stage, a draw was followed by thirty minutes of extra time (two fifteen minute halves); if scores were still level there would be a penalty shootout (at least five penalties each, and more if necessary) to determine who progressed to the next round. Scores after extra time are indicated by (AET), and penalty shoot outs are indicated by (PSO).
