Georgiapolis (Greek: Γεοργιαπολις (IPA:[ˈdʒɔːɹ.dʒəˈpəlɪs]), officially Hellenic Republic of Georgiapolis (Ελληνική Δημοκρατία Γεοργιαπολις [e̞ˌliniˈci ðimo̞kraˈtiˌa dʒɔːɹ.dʒəˈpəlɪs]), is a nation located in Adria with a population of approx. 5 million. Georgiapolis does not have an official capital city however all parliamentary actions take place in the House of Parliament located in Yiannopolis, Georgiapolis City. Recently there has been talk of the capital being moved to the more recognisable Kypakos however these rumours have never come to fruition.

The state endured a massive boom in the 90's with the discovery of oil and gold in the sea south of the city. It is the largest nation in Adria and one of the most visited nations in the USCN. Its major cities comprise of Georgiapolis City, Kypakos and Smyros.

It is widely considered to be one of if not the most influential nations in the USCN, sparking the revolution and other changes within the USCN Framework as well as Co-founding the AU. The overly opinionated and sometimes irrational claims by the President have landed Georgiapolis in hot water many times, usually with the leaders of the northern nations in the USCN.

As of October 2006, Georgiapolis is one of the original members of the most powerful alliance in the SimWorld, The Adrian Union.

History

Overview

Ruins from the Sanctuary of Heron in Kypakos
Georgiapolis was a Hellenic city-state located in the southern half of Adria. At its height, it became the most important economic center of the Hellenic world owning a large fleet of trade ships which historians believed to be in excess of 10,000.

In ancient times, Georgiapolis competed economically and politically with neighbouring cities such as Athinas and Sparatkas. Neither of these cities however where as democratic as Georgiapolis. In 203bc, Megas Alexandros became king of Georgiapolis after his father died in the battle of Scregonis. He was just 14 when he gained control of the state although he had ambitions on conquering the known world. On his campaign to capture the barbaric lands to the north west of Georgiapolis (present day Apolonia), he contracted a deadly disease common in that time. He died 2 months later which ended the heroic plans of his to expand Georgiapolis.

In 30ad, Georgiapolis was losing power and interest among the international community. It became poor in natural resources and was militarily weak to the up and coming Manterians to the north. In March 30A.D, Georgiapolis was attacked by the Manterian army however the defence of the Hellenic state was enough to allow the Manterians to retreat. Although the peace was kept for some 60 years, the battle crippled the state which sent it into a dark age. During this period, Manteria eventually seized control over the state and later went on to dominate Adria for several hundred years.

After the fall of Manteria partly due to Genavan rebellion, Georgiapolis slowly started to regain its importance in Adria. The port served as the number one importer from the south during the 11th century. In this time, Georgiapolis flourished as a place for scholars.

In 1664, The Murks invaded Georgiapolis inorder to acquire the riches from trade. Georgiapolis recieved aid from the western state of Argel however that was not enough to hold of the offending Murks who took control of the land for 200 years. They changed the names of several cities to suit thier of Murkish language. Cities such as Billionstonis where changed to Villionston and modern day Harushia had its name changed from the original Greek name Xarusias. Many city names have been reverted however to thier old names, including Billionstonis. Harushia has also expressed interest in changing its name back to the original. During this Murk period, the Hellenes of Georgiapolis where oppressed and the Hellenic culture suffered in the long run.

The Murks where defeated in the battle of Geo on March 25th, 1864 and Georgiapolis was once again an independent nation. The city stayed quiet for the next 30 years until Rehaggel II, a radical dictator took charge of the nation. During his reign he ordered the removal of several buildings of importance such as the old parliament. Harushia was almost totally destroyed to make way for ugly apartment blocks and commercial buildings however today a new plan to recreate the cities former streets has been put into place. The dictator was assasinated and soon after a democratic goverment system was put into place. Since then, Georgiapolis has prospered economically and socially into one of the most important nations in SimWorld.

In 2006, Georgiapolis was a founding member of the Adrian Union and has since adopted the once currency of the union, the Adrio as well as increased ties with neighbour Genava and northern Adrian nation Manteria.

The Newport Suppression

In recent years, the Georgiapolis government has been pressured to admit that during the years following the nations freedom from the Murks (a race originating from Newport), the Georgiapolis authorities suppressed the peoples of the Hellakos prefecture in North-East Georgiapolis, just below the former Newport border. The people in this prefecture had historically been Newporters and they spoke Tagalog but during the Hellenic Independence, Georgiapolis had seized this land from the then poor state of Newport and allegedly killed any man woman or child who spoke a word of the forbidden language of Tagalog.

The actual events have been disputed by historians and many pass it off as Newport's own propaganda in order to get the land back for its own modern state however it is proven that Georgiapolis did exercise some form of suppression during these times against the Newporters as documents showing that the government did indeed force the sending back of many people in the region to the main urban centres of Newport such as Newport City and Corona.

Economy

Georgiapolis is a prospering state with many assets including its nice beaches. These beaches help the tourism sector which in turn makes Georgiapolis a very rich place. The biggest sector is commerce with over 3.5 million commercial jobs available in the region. Major contributors to the economy include Clothing and Textiles, Tourism and Production of Olive Oil (as well as general olice exports). In 2006, the GDP of Georgiapolis was $216.826.000.000 and $52.000.000 per capita. although this number is speculated at being over estimated.

Tourism

Tourism is a large industry counting for almost 10% of the states GDP. In 2006, Georgiapolis was the most visited nation in the USCN by number of Arrivals. There was a 21% increase in visitors since the completion of the new airport.

Attractions include the history of Georgiapolis and its many ruins as well as seaside resorting and the southern Balckam Islands. The most popular destination for tourism is Bayton which after 2006 has received more tourists than any other city in Georgiapolis. Harushia is still ranking high however it has lost several tourists after the city lost its importance and title as capital. In 2007 it is expected to once again host a large number of tourists as the city has been transformed into a shopping Mecca.

Yiannopolis, the capital city of Georgiapolis now receives the third largest amount of tourists, mainly people visiting the parliament building along with all the other old structures and the Spanish district. Tourism here appears to be on a sharp increase since becoming the capital city and it is expected to grow a lot more in 2007 through to 2010.

Haurshia is known as the fashion capital.

Bayton is the most visited city in the nation. The city is the world capital of clubbing and partying and it also has the largest gay scene of all nations. The cities population swells to 1 million in the summer months when tourists flock to the beaches and clubs to enjoy Bayton's seaside lifestyle.

Despite early reports from analysts predicting a rise in tourism for West Deponshire, the city remains a backwater in the industry mainly due to the fact that there is no important factors to attract visitors. Last year a small and insignificant rise was recorded for the city mainly due to the SimCup matches.

The Balkan Islands are expected to be significant shakers this year as the islands are opened to the world for the first time. Previously the islands where not allowed for tourists due to the historic and religious significance however in 2007 the government has opened up ports for visitors in order to allow tourists to spend their money on the beaches of these stunning isles. The islands also have an amazingly unique architecture with the colours of blue and white prevailing.

Clothing

After the redevelopment and replan of Harushia's future path, the goverment decided to turn Harushia into a fashion capital. With this decision, pedestrian malls and many exclusive botiques opened up in Georgiapolis. Today, most of the exclusive and expensive clothing brands are manufactured and operated from Georgiapolis. This has meant a large amount of Clothing and Textiles are now exported to other nations. In 2006, the largest importer of Georgiapolian clothing was Jistisland. Already however the industry is suffering from cheap and inferior imports from Newport.

Politics

Yiannopolis, home of the Parliament

Possibly the most controversial nation in the USCN, Georgiapolis generally has peaceful relations with most nations however it has been in the middle of many crossfires over the years. The most recent has been with fellow USCN state Muyangguniang.

The issues with Muyangguniang have now blown over with the induction of a new Peace park alliance. The Platia Muyangguniang sits in downtown Yiannopolis and stands as a testament to good relations in the USCN. There is also a square dedicated to Georgiapolis in the Muyangguniang capital.

Issues

There have been several issues between Muyangguniang and Georgiapolis in history. The largest issue came in September 2006 when Genava decided to leave the USCN. This created a controversy which sparked a cold war between these two nations. Due to this turmoil, Georgiapolis was forced to side with its Adrian ally. In this period, Georgiapolis also declared resignation from the USCN.

An emergency assembly was called for all member states and Georgiapolis was asked to remain a USCN member. Suprisingly, Sutherway did not support the re-entry of Georgiapolis which left what most would consider a crippling blow on the relationship of the otherwise close nations.

Georgiapolis vowed to stay in the USCN as long as there was more equality for all members. This lead to the USCN Revoloution which would never have had happened if it wasnt for the affairs of the Adrian Governments.

USCN Regional HQ dispute

In October 2006, Georgiapolis was again to have a dispute with Muyangguniang, this time about the size of the Georgiapolis regional HQ. Muyangguniang and other allied governments (namely Sutherway) critisized the regonal hq of Georgiapolis of being bigger than the main USCN HQ in Muyangguniang. Georgiapolis never denied these claims however instead of simply relocating the HQ, Georgiapolis challenged Muyangguniang to find a bigger HQ as the main.

This stirred alot of controversy in the USCN between several nations against Georgiapolis however the government of Georgiapolis cunningly hit back at every remark made by the global press. This proved to be a massive blow in the relations between Muyangguniang, Kirkcaldy and Yiannopolis.

Global Opinions

There seems to be mixed feelings in the SimWorld about Georgiapolis. On the 25th of October 2006, Muyanguggiang made a statement claiming that Georgiapolis was always the 'radical' state and that it would constantly go against the wishes of the USCN. Other press including that of Sutherway stated that Georgiapolis was dictating within the USCN. All of these claims where denied by Georgiapolis' foreign minister and USCN Delegate who told international media that this was all due to the issues raised when Georgiapolis and Genava threatened to leave the USCN.

When asked to comment on the opinion on Georgiapolis Politics, The president of Genava stated "Well ur my ally and I love your nation. Depsite rumours however, President Eleftherios Beneditzios Psirrakios denies claims that he is in a relationship with Genavaian President Jean Paul Gaultier.

Georgiapolis also considers to have loose relations with Newport and has earned a poor reputation with Heil and Jistisland for critisizing the 2 nations vaulnerability to terrorism and the large amount of it in the two countries respectivly.

Allies

Georgiapolis considers its strongest allies to be Aosta, Genava and Manteria with loose connections to Newport and an increasingly great relation with Sutherway.

The official 'active allies' of Georgiapolis as stated by the government are:

  • Genava
  • Aosta
  • Manteria
  • Sutherway
  • Newport

The active allies program launched in April 2007 by President Beneditzios was a way of creating even stronger relations with the current allies. It was also a way to keep track of which nations Georgipolis considers to be the most important in the USCN.

Climate

Georgiapolis has 3 different climates with one dominating climate which is Ionian. In the north east, it is possible to find snow capped mountains all year round as well as frozen lakes in the winter. The average annual rainfall in Georgiapolis is 17 inches and the capital city is in a transitional area where Ionian and Temperate climates meet.

Kykladic Islands

The islands to the north of Georgiapolis experience a dry climate with very little annual rainfall. This has made the islands drought striken and has forced pipelines to be built between the mainland to supply the islands with an abundance of water.

Sports

Georgiapolis has a strong sporting tradition being the founders of the Simlympic games in Ancient times. The countries sporting excellence was displayed in the successful hosting and winning of the 2006 SimCup.

SimCup Georgiapolis

SimCup Georgiapolis has no doubt regenerated a lost beauty in Georgiapolis with several cities recieving makeovers in preperation for the event.

It is said to be the most organised event in the history of SimWorld and it took years to prepare. Unfortunatly, due to the fact that it simply wasnt feasable to continue running the Cup, it has seen several delays and sluggish fixtures. The event finally finished and Georgiapolis came out victorious with a 4-2 win over neighbour Apolonia.

Georgiapolis is ranked first in the SimCity Football Federation rankings.
