Newport(Filipino: Bagong Pier), officially the Republic of Newport, is an island nation, with the City of Newport as the national capital. It is composed of two large islands and 5 smaller ones.

The country's name came from the founder of the country, Maximo Cartel, who named the two islands Rehiyon ng Bagong Pier for Region of Newport, during his landing in April 1, 1754 and proclamed the islands as a new nation.

History

Pre Coronan Era

The history of Newport dates back to the 10th century when the Manterians invaded Georgiapolis in 30 A.D. and most of the Adrian continent by 90 A.D. Although present-day Newport was well within the Manterian border, most of the inhabitants of the Manterian Empire were concentrated in Georgiapolis, and Manteria. This allowed anyone to invade the territory without resistance.

In the 11th century, the Chaeseong people began settling in the northwest region of present-day Newport City and Southwest Genava. In 1084, Genavan and Berber records began showing texts and images of a vast Kingdom with the port city of Chiong as the capital city with King Yu Taejeo as the first ruler of the Chaeseong Kingdom. Under King Yu Taejeo, the borders of the Chaeseong Kingdom were closed and trade was forbidden with other nations in the Adrian continent. This angered the Gwanggyu Nobles who wanted to exchange their silk and laquerware.

In 1105, King Yu Taejeo was overthrown by the Gwanggyu people and Yi Hakdo was placed on the throne. Yi was chosen by the Gwanggyu people because he was the youngest of the nobles who were old enough to be a king. At the age of 16, he was proclaimed King Yi under the direction of the Gwanggyu leader Han Jiseung. He became the youngest leader in Newport history. By 1123, the Chaeseong Kingdom opened its gates and trade was establised. The name Chaeseong was not changed under King Yi who refused to replace the name with Gwanggyu.

The Coronans

In 1191, people known as Coronans from the Southern Adrian Region began settling north to flee the conquering Sutherway. They set up settlements near the southern Chaeseong Kingdom border. King Yi believed they were attacking Chaeseong land although ancient maps showed a ten kilometer border between the two settlements. In 1193, King Yi ordered an attack of Corona, the capital city of the Coronans.

Although the Coronans were no match for the Sutherway Army, they were well-trained and had more knowledge in combat than the Chaeseong troops. By 1195, the Coronans were at war with the Chaeseong Kingdom. The war only lasted until 1197 with the final defeat of the Chaeseong Kingdom in the village of Chai, present-day Southeast Newport City.

The Coronan Empire

File:Oldmap.jpg
An old map of Adria created during the reign of the Coronan Empire.

In 1200, the Coronans invaded the city of the Chiong and captured the eastern area where the Chengyu Palace was located. King Yi was asked to flee but refused to leave his throne. When the Coronan Army arrived at the Chengyu Palace, they captured King Yi and beheaded him at the entrance steps of the palace. The Coronans then attacked the rest of the city killing civilians until every Chaeseongese fled the city. In August 1201, the Coronan Empire was established under the capital city of Corona. The port city of Chiong was annexed to the capital making Corona the largest city at the time.

In 1662, the Murks of southwest region of Murkia of the Coronan Empire invaded Georgiapolis to steal thier profits from trade. After a long struggle, they eventually controlled the Hellenic state in 1664 and remained in control until March 25, 1864, when the conquerors were defeated by the Georgiapolians at the battle of Geo.

During the Murkish reign, several cities in Georgiapolis were changed from their original Greek form and made more simple. After their defeat, the government of Georgiapolis returned the names of most of the cities changed from their old state. Even today, some cities such as Harushia (Formerly Xarusias) have not been reverted to their old names.

In recent years, the Georgiapolis government has been pressured to admit that during the years following the nations freedom from the Murks, the Georgiapolis authorities suppressed the peoples of the Hellakos prefecture in North-East Georgiapolis, just below the Newport border. The people in this prefecture had historically been Newporters and they spoke Tagalog but during the Hellenic Independence, Georgiapolis had seized this land from the then poor state of Newport and allegedly killed any man woman or child who spoke a word of the forbidden language of Tagalog.

The actual events have been disputed by historians and many pass it off as Newport's own propaganda in order to get the land back for its own modern state however it is proven that Georgiapolis did exercise some form of suppression during these times against the Newporters as documents showing that the government did indeed force the sending back of many people in the region to the main urban centres of Newport such as Newport City and Corona.

Newport Revolt, Fall of the Coronan Empire and the Crown Wars

Due to the high military dependancy of the Coronan Empire to the Murks, their defeat at the battle of Geo crippled the empire in defence and caused the territory to become vulnerable to invasions. As a result, the Newporters of the north took advantage of their vulnerability and launched a revolt against the Coronans.

On August 19, 1888, the Newport Independence Army launched an attack on the capital city of Corona. Almost immediately, the Coronan government officials surrendered, saving the city from any destruction. According to many historians, when the Newporters were marching towards Corona, King Victor VI along with a few politicians fleed to Georgiapolis to escape capture. Still, many believe the old folktale in which King Victor VI was indeed captured and sent to an island in the Central Ocean where he spent his life away from civilization.

The capture of the Coronan capital caused the secession of all Coronan states and marked the beginning of the Crown Wars, a five year civil war between the states of the former Coronan Empire.

Politics and Government

The government of Newport is organized as a presidential-unitary republic, where the President functions as head of state, the head of government, and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The president is elected by popular vote to a 4-year term, during which he or she appoints and presides over the cabinet of secretaries.

The bicameral Congress comprises the Senate and the House of Representatives; members of the former are elected at large and those of the latter by geographical district. The 24 senators serve 4-year terms, with half retiring every three years, while the House of Representatives comprises 250 members serving 2-year terms.

The judicial branch of government is headed by the Supreme Court, with a Chief Justice as its head and 14 associate justices, all appointed by the President from nominations submitted by the Judicial and Bar Council. Other courts include the Court of Appeals, the Regional Trial Courts and the Metropolitan Trial Courts.

Regions and Territories

Newport is composed of two large islands and five smaller ones. The large ones are separated by the Abacan River. Southern Newport takes the south island, and Northern Newport takes the north island. Ten regions separate both islands. Southern Newport has seven regions, while Northern Newport has four. The region of Newport is shared by both islands. While the city is located in the Newport Region, the capital city of Newport Region is the City of Corona.

The most inhabited region is Newport with more than 1,000,000 people.

On October 26, 2006, Newport and Hëil agreed on a treaty to divide the Scandin Territory between the nations. Newport takes the southern half, and Hëil takes the north. The territory taken by Newport is called Southern Scandin. It is the least inhabited region in Newport with less than 1,000 people living in it.

The Newport Islands are composed of many different physical features. Each Newport region has its own features.

Newport Region is divided by the Abacan River. It has a humid landscape with dense deciduous forests. Crops and livestocks are main sources of income for the region. The land is good for farming because of the nearby Evergreen Volcano. The crops grown mainly are wheat and barley. Fishing is also a source of income for Newport Region.

Coal is a type of mining done in the northern portion of the Western Newport Ranges which is in the Newport Region territory. It was used to fuel coal power plants and trains during the 1930's. Now that the use of clean sources of energy and electric powered trains are increasing, the mining of coal is decreasing and will eventually end over time.

To the north of Newport region is the region of Suprema. Suprema has similar physical features as the Newport Region. It is a vast, humid plain with rough coastlines. Fishing is common in Suprema especially in the northern part.

Tawi is a region to the northeast of Northern Newport. It is the location of the infamous Tawi Bay, a bay infamous for its sunsets. The bay is the primary fishing spot of Tawi and an international port.

Tawi claims the northern half of the island of Clavis. Clavis island is rich in oil and copper, one of the richest in the SimWorld. The other half is claimed by Austa.

Austa is a Northern Newport region, the second largest region in Newport next to Scandin. Austa's massive size gives it different physical features.

The western part of Austa is a temperate climate with such as the climates of Newport Region and Suprema. The eastern side of Austa is more of a semiarid climate.

The eastern part of Austa has a prairie landscape with few or no trees. The area is infamous for its ranching of mostly llamas and cows.

Southern Newport is based on manufacturing goods like electronics and food production. In the regions of Mayberry, New Scotia, and Saresa, thousands of manufacturing factories produce cars, electronic equipment, and vehicle parts. While in the Gato Islands, Gold mining is the main industry.

Talleyrand and Quiln are fishing regions and are known for their ranches.

Foreign Relations

Georgiapolis

Newport tends to share an unstable relationship with Georgiapolis at most times, mainly due to the neutral hatred between both citizens. However both nations have managed to sucessfully organise the SimCup II tournament which was held in Georgiapolis and both have worked together to run the bidding process of future tournaments. In October 2006, Newport citizens decided to boycott Georgiapolian products, most notably fashion labels which also spawned a number of imitation apparel which was being made in Newport. Shipments of fake Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana were streaming out of the Port in Newport which wrecked havoc among international consumers.

Economy

Newport Central Business District

Newport is a major economic power, having the 5th largest economy in Adrijin and the 2nd largest in Jintu. The catalyst for Newport's rapid economic growth was the increasing export of manufactured goods along with the decrease of extortion among government officials beginning in the 1950s. Today, the major industries of Newport are automobiles, electronics and oil production.

In the first half of the 20th century, Newport was one of the poorest countries in Adrijin due to high political extortion and corruption. Its infrastructure was highly undeveloped since there usually was no budget for construction after massive bribes made by local governments. After the presidency of Marco Estrada, the country's economy declined steeply after his administration was marred by massive government corruption amounting to well over 20 billion adrios. However, following the approval of the Charter Change Act of 1953, Newport experienced three straight decades of rapid economic growth, one of the fastest ever seen in history.

Jean Veracruz embarked on a series of five-year plans that transformed Newport from a farming and fishing based economy into one of the world's most high-tech industrial powers. Emphasis shifted to trade which resulted in a boom in trade and investment. Rapid expansion in light and heavy industries brought Newport to the top 10 largest economies in Adrijin in 1985.

The nation's prosperity increased when oil was discovered in the outskirts of San Mateo in the region of Quiln in 1993. The resource was quickly exploited to aid in Christopher Nadal's goal to decrease the country's dependence in foreign oil imports. The government's UNFINISHED

Newport also has one of the most vibrant business process outsourcing (BPO) industries in the SimWorld. Numerous call centers and BPO firms have infused momentum into the Newport market, generating thousands of jobs.

In January 2008, Newport chose the Adrio as the new currency, abandoning the Simoleon (§).

Stock Exchange

Newport boosts two major stock exchanges, Newport Stock Exchange (NSE) and Corona Stock Exchange (CSE).

The NSE and the CSE before the mid-1940s were reminiscent of other outcry stock exchanges found throughout the SimWorld before the technological advancements made during the last decade. On November 13, 1943, the Corona Stock Exchange started the computerization of its operations using the Stratus Trading System (STS) with a company called Intelligent Wave Newport. Later that year, on December 15, the Newport Stock Exchange adopted the MakTrade trading system. Both systems were linked on May 25, 1994, producing one set of opening and closing share prices, but orders were queued up on two different books.

Two years later, on November 13, 1996, both systems were operating under the MakTrade system.

When the NSE and the CSE started trading bonds on January 15, 2001, the system was modified to allow stock brokers to trade bonds using the same terminal. Also, the NSE/CSE-RoSS Interface System, a system allowing stock brokers to access the Newport Bureau of the Treasury's Registry of Scriptless Securities (BTr-RoSS), was made operational on the same day.

Culture

The contemporary culture of Newport is heavily dominated by technology, including feature-rich cell phones and pervasive online gaming. Newport today has one of the highest penetration of high-speed internet access to households in the world. Digital multimedia broadcasting, a system very few nations have, now allows Newporters to watch television on their cell phones.

Recently, Newport pop culture has become very popular in Adria. Television dramas like Can't Get You Outa My Head have found success in countries such as Georgiapolis. Newport popular music has also made it to international television when the country participated in its first Adriovision song contest held in Brescia.

However, the country still retains centuries-old customs and traditions, such as its unique cuisine and ancestor worship.

Media

Newport was one of the first nations in the SimWorld to broadcast on television. The broadcasting corporation Newport Radio Broadcasting Channel (NRBC), is the oldest and largest commercial television broadcaster in the SimWorld (although the Sutherwish have pointed out that the competing broadcasting company Stv is the largest, but has yet to prove so). Founded in the early 40's, it grew from broadcasting radio in the small city of Newport to delivering news and information to the Adrian Union through its international television service, NRBC Global.

It's dramas have also crossed borders into foreign territories as fans mostly residing in Adria continue to crave more bittersweet romance stories from the channel.

Education

Newport has one of the largest and most prestegous universities in the SimWorld. The Eastern Newport Univerity is the only university in Newport that can compete with the standards with that of Sutherway's. Founded in 1663, it is the oldest university in Newport.

The institution has taught 34 of the 52 presidents of Newport including the current preident, Matteo Caiatano.

Sports

The Newport national football team is formed by the Newport Football Federation. Founded in May 2006, the team first played internationally, in the 1st SimCity Football Tournament, or SimCup I, held in Newport. They played against three other nations: Muyangguniang, Sutherway, and Georgiapolis.

Another international event was started in July 2006. The SimCup II was a football event held in Georgiapolis.

Basketball plays a big role in Newport's culture. Along with it's Earthling sister nation the Philippines, basketball is a favorite sport among the citizens making it the most popular sport in the country. The Newport Professional Basketball League (NPBL), is the basketball organization of Newport. The association is composed of fourteen teams.

The Newport Cup, is a confrence (tournament) held during NPBL season.
