X On Fire Reviews/Vice - Project Doom
From Wuw Archive
In 1990, a little-known company named Sammy made an NES game called Vice - Project Doom. The game is very unique, with levels completely seperate from each other. I'll provide a level-by level review, starting from, well, the start.

1-1
At first glance, this may look like an ordinary racing game. What this level really is is a shooter in disquise. You control a car, shooting down various vehicles. B fires a projectile, and A switches between your three speeds. The level is very short and easy, with a little boss at the end. Shoot him down, and you'll be in for a shock as you progress to the next level...
2-1
...A platformer! After the first level, the game turns on its head and turns into a surprisingly fun adventure. Select now changes your weapon from a beam sword to a gun to grenades. You jump with a and fire with B.
We now find our selves in a construction site. There are some strange enemies here, especially the crawling enemy with what looks like a mohawk. After the first screen, the action picks up and the bridge starts falling beneath your feet! After you get to the end of the section, you'll find a ladder leading down to the next screen. Strangely, though, jumping down next to the ladder kills you. The level goes roughly straightforward from there, until you hit the boss room.
2-2
This boss is pretty easy. He starts on the far right, throwing girders at you at varying heights. I recommend using the gun. You might want to duck, because some girders will be able to fly over your head. After a few throws, he'll jump to the other side of the screen. Keep firing until he dies, and you'll reach the next level.
3-1
This is where things take a turn for the difficult. We first meet the cheetah enemy here, and they can be a pain if you don't take precautions. There aren't too many major surprises here, so continue on until you reach the next boss.
3-2
At first, I thought this guy was nearly unbeatable. The stage has two platforms in the middle. Use these to your advantage, as he'll take a page right out of Pit's book and dash across the screen with his sword twirling away. When he doesn't do that, he'll fire waves of three fireballs, which I learned from a guide can be ducked under. Using this strategy, he should go down in under a minute.
4-1
The next stage takes you into a movie studio, where cheetahs, samurais, and men with generic blasting gun-like items want to wish you a pleasant stay and quick death. And there are tons of them to combat. Luckily, this stage is remarkably short. Beat it, and a new surprise awaits you.
4-2
Instead of a boss battle, you're sent to an auto-scrolling FPS segment. In this level, you're forced to shoot various enemies, and the items they drop. A fires your gun, while B fires a grenade. Use the D-Pad to aim. Again, you'll be done with this stage before you can say "driverplatformerfirstpersonshooter."
5-1
Forget any inking of difficulty that this game ever suggested. These next two levels will test every scrape of skills you have acquired along the way. Thank goodness for infinite continues, because you will need them. You're sent into the jungle, where you'll find some enemies you'll wish you'd never met. You've got some birds that fly back and forth at a speed you can barely hit them at. If that's not enough, have some high-jumping, extremely fast men with swords! There's also a larger looking enemy with a smaller jump that can still be hard to deal with if you're careless. After an almost pixel-perfect jump, this nightmare will end with a vertical segment forcing you to climb up a waterfall on falling logs. Reach the top, and the second level begins.
5-2
Luckily, game overs send you back to 5-2 instead of 5-1. Now, there are vines to deal with. Attack them and they'll disappear, but they'll soon reappear. And to make matters worse, you get the pleasure of platforming on thin islands over bottomless pits! To make this even more fun, there are fish that can shoot three balls. The balls will drift down, just to make your life a bit more miserable. And, guess what else? BIRDS! After another trip through these evil enemies, you'll find a boss. It's a giant tank-like structure that shoots missles and fire. Jump on top of the fire-spouter and you'll be in range of the boss's weakness. Jump back down, and attack at the blue spere.
At this time of writing, I have yet to beat this stage.
