Australia has a large number of political parties, and due to its particular circumstances (incorporating Pacific nations as Australian states) has a large number of state parties, and alliances between them.

Major Federal Parties

These parties act nationally, standing successful candidates in most state/territory elections, and federal elections.

• Australian Labor Party
  • Australia's traditional moderate social-democratic party (New Zealand Labour Party members traditionally affiliate with the ALP in the Federal Parliament).
• Liberty and Democracy Party of Australia
  • Classical liberal party, has held government since 1990. Led by Chris Marshall, Prime Minister of Australia
• National Party of Australia
  • Formerly part of the Liberal/National Coalition, now independent with two seats only.

Minor Federal Parties

State/Territory Political Parties

These parties either stand only in state/territorial elections, and/or only stand federal candidates in their own state. They are frequently allied to a national party.

Mainland Australia

• Liberal Party of Australia

New Zealand

• New Zealand Labour Party
  • N.B. The New Zealand Labour Party does have seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate, however, it stands only in New Zealand, and its members sit with the Australian Labor Party
• New Zealand National Party
  • Unrelated to the National Party of Australia, a centre-right party. Presently the government party in the State of New Zealand

Papua New Guinea

• National Alliance Party
• Papua New Guinea Party

Fiji

• United Fiji Party
• Fiji Labour Party
  • N.B. The Fiji Labour Party does have seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate, however, it stands only in Fiji, and its members sit with the Australian Labor Party

Solomon Islands

• Solomon Islands Labour Party
  • N.B. The Solomon Islands Labour Party does have seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate, however, it stands only in the Solomon Islands, and its members sit with the Australian Labor Party

Northern Territory

• Country Liberal Party
  • Traditionally aligned with the Liberal/National Coalition, it is now aligned with the LDP
