Shapeshifter is a special creature in And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon because he symbolizes transformation--the principal theme of the work. True to Shapeshifter's nature, this encounter has taken a new form every year. Shapeshifter is the mover, the wellspring of all great changes in Patria. Without him perhaps nothing important would ever happen. We write 'him' but in reality he has no gender and can as easily appear as a woman, an animal or a three-pronged stick. In And Wolf Shall Inherit the Moon, he appears as fire, an amoral force, simultaneously destructive and liberating. Shapeshifter is impervious to feelings because he has no heart. His heart is kept hidden in a secret place deep in the forest, which he occasionally visits to receive infusions of new energy. In the forest encounter we are conducted to this high-energy place for a dangerous encounter with Shapeshifter.
