"Kekkai" is the Japanese word for "protective ward". In X, the Seals can generate these, presumably from their spirit, thus dubbing them spirit shields in English. They take on various shapes, related somehow to its caster. For example, Kasumi Karen's kekkai takes the shape of a giant cross. She is a devout Catholic.
If you are a Kamui, Gemini or a converter and new to being a Seal, you will have to learn how to make a spirit shield. You need to find what you wish to protect and be able to wish it strongly enough so that your barrier won't fail. If a Seal loses his or her will to live, or to protect humanity, they lose their ability to create kekkai.
